What kitchen would be complete without at least ONE pyrex glass baking dish? This is an essential item for rookie cooks and old pros alike. I have a nice collection of Pyrex baking dishes in many shapes and sizes, but for this review I chose the perfect size 11x7 2 quart glass baking pan that I use most often.
A scaled back version of the ever-popular 9 x 13 pan that is required for many casserole and bar recipes, the 11 x 7 is the perfect size for cooking small batch meals. Since I cook mainly for 2 people, the 11 x 7 accommodates recipes that have been halved or quartered perfectly.
It's deep enough at 1.6 inches to handle layers of lasagnas without spilling over the edge. I use a touch of spray oil to ensure foods are easy to remove, but I use far less than I would with a regular aluminum pan. Dishes cook beautifully and evenly in the Pyrex 11 x 7, and is esthetically pleasing enough to go from refrigerator to stove to table. (Major Warning: Never place a cold glass dish directly from refrigerator into a hot oven, or from a hot oven onto a cold surface, as there is always a chance the glass could shatter). While this has never happened to me with any of my Pyrex cookware, the possibility does exist, with Pyrex or any glass bake-ware.)
I have found my Pyrex to be among the most durable pieces in my kitchen collection. They clean up easily, and resist scratches and chips far better than stoneware or metalware. The non-reactive glass won't alter the flavor or texture of foods, as some metal or enamelware can.
Made in the USA, I feel good about supporting our economy and buying "locally". In short, Pyrex makes superior products that are affordable, durable and user friendly too.
