WARNING!!! DANGER - NEW PRO PLAN SHREDDED - DANGER!!!
I am horrified by my dogs reactions to the New Pro Plan Beef "Shredded" formula!  For 13 years I have fed my Jack Russells Pro Plan Beef with no problems. After just one day on this new food they have experienced major problems! I took them off the food immediately and 2 weeks later they are still experiencing the effects - upset stomach and vomiting, greatly increased defication, and at night in particular reacting like they are on speed - anxious, twiching and scratching like their skin is onfire.
Since this started I began asking around and have heard countless stories now of similar problem ... or worse! (esp. with older dogs) If anyone has a recommendation how to counteract these problem I would be grateful if you would post it here. I have called Purina and told them of the problems - I recommend that you do the same. Their toll free # is 800-776-7526.
It is so seroius that my local pet store (after MANY complaints) is banning the product from being sold in their store - I recommend that you ask your store to do the same! I would hate to see anyone be sued over selling this stuff!

I had a similar problem. I have 2 golden retrievers. One golden I had changed her food, she was having problems with corn and her ears. My younger golden I hadn't switched. She was still eating the proplan, oh my gosh the diarrhea that came out of this poor little girl terrible. I was concerned, took her to the vet, she's on some medication and a vet low residue food. That has helped with the diarrhea, after talking to many people and my own research I have picked the Acana Lamb & apple for my youngest golden. My older golden is on the Acana Adult Dog food and doing very well. They were both on proplan from very young puppies and did well on it. It's a shame they made the change, why change something that was working. A lot of dogs have been sick from this new formula change. I'm glad I took my young girl to the vet and am changing her food before anything serious happened. I called Purina they apologized and said they would send out coupons. I told them not to bother as I won't be using their product again.

I am so very sorry to hear about your puppy. I know how helpless I felt with mine! It took over 2 months for that food to get completely out of their systems - I am happy to say that nightmare is now over ... or at least it seems to be. Who know what long term damage that food might have caused - even Pruina dosen't know ... or won't let on that they know for fear of law suits.
Please let us know how your puppy is doing!

ginny - I'm so sorry your pug is sick. I wouldn't know what caused her illness - I'm always one to take them to the vet when in doubt.

So very to sorry to hear your dogs have suffered too. It was almost 2 months after I stopped the food till they started to come around.
Regarding the food purchase - I call the ProPlan hot line and blasted them the issues and those I knew from other folks (including Vets). They sent me a coupon for a free bag of the "select" - all seem to be doing well on it. You might want to give it a try.

I was using the Pro Plan Salmon for sensitive stomach and all was well. We have three dogs, two Shih Tzu's and a large mutt. When my local market was out of the usual food, I bought the shredded chicken blend and they all LOVED it! That was about 1 month ago and now my youngest Shih Tzu has had diarrhea (cow piles) for 4 days and the large mutt just started with the same type of stool today. I have removed the food, unfortunately they had loved it so much that we just bought the 35 lb. bag last week.

I am terrified that my dog (my child) has been suffering with out me knowing it. Abby (apbt) has been on proplan since a puppy. In the past few months she has had gas every day! Her stomach is upset every morning, and avoids the food in the bowl when she used to scarf it down. Now I feel the need to take her to the vet and have tests done. I am very scared because she is my whole life and if she has been damaged because of this, pro plan will here from my attorney! I cant believe I did not act sooner! I have already contacted proplan and they said they will help with vet bills but I dont believe them. I think this should go NATION WIDE. If anyone knows how to launch a ban before some ones dog has an irriversible accident, let me know. I want to make a difference. I will check back with this forum soon.

Thanks so much for the warning on the food. I had a small bag to try and it is now land fill.

I also feed Pro Plan Chicken and Rice for years. When I couldn't buy it last December, I bought the bags of Pro Plan Shredded Chicken, within 3 weeks my Cavaliers had stools that looked like cow piles, One bitch was nursing puppies, after testing for numerous germs, a local rottweiler breeder came into the vet with the same problem and using the same food. Vet had us put the dogs on canned EN and told us to change food. All but the bitch that was nursing pups turned around immediately. The mother was getting worse and beginning to look like a skeleton. Blood was drawn and sent to Cornell and results came back with Pancreatic Deficiency. She was put on Pancreatic Enzymes and with in three day her stools cleared up. It appears that the Pancreas is damaged, of course Purina is still denying that their is a problem. We spent over $800.00 in vet bills trying to clear up all the problems which included excessive dandruff (mange) hair falling out by the handfuls, and stools looking like cow piles. They were so starved they wanted to immediately eat their stools, I have talked to many breeders at Dog shows who have had the same problem with the Shredded Blend which apparently is a soy product. Advantage cleared up the skin problem, Flagel did nothing to stop or even slow down the diarrhea. Some dogs seem to be able to handle this food, but I wouldn't push it.

I too have had problems with my dog on this food. Only she has some type of bacterial infection in her skin that we have not yet been able to treat. The vet told me that he has never seen this type of bacteria and is a result of spoiled food. She has gone on 2 rounds of different antibiotics and is still not well. We are going back to the vet this week.
