My dog Rebel is pretty fussy about the dry food he eats. Most times, it's necessary to mix his dry food with people food to get him to eat it. I received a sample package of Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food in the mail the other day. It was different from any other dry food we have tried and my dog really liked it.

About Purina Pro Shredded

Pro Plan Shredded Blend Chicken and Rice formula is a new and different type of dry dog food from Purina. It's a mixture of hard kibbles and tender shredded pieces with real chicken as the #1 ingredient. The packaging states that the rice and whole wheat that are also listed as ingredients are "highly digestible sources of carbohydrates for energy and quality fiber sources to promote easy clean up." A 6 lb. bag costs approximately $13.00 and is sold at most pet stores and online. I have not seen it at a grocery store yet but assume it will be as other Purina products are.

My Experience

After reading the package, I was impressed that the number one ingredient was real chicken. I poured the food into my dog's bowl and the mixture of the hard and shredded pieces kind of resembled what his food looked like when I added table scraps. The shredded pieces looked like little pieces of chicken and I believe that my dog thought so too because he gobbled it right up. He hardly ever eats his dry food alone. It makes me feel good knowing that with the added antioxidants and vitamins, this food provides my dog with the nutrition he needs.

My Final Viewpoint

Purina Pro Plan Shredded Blend Adult Dog Food is one that my dog loves and that I feel comfortable giving him. It's certainly not the best dog food out there but the fact that it contains real chicken as the first ingredient is a pretty good sign that it is a decent product. I recommend it and I am giving it a 3 star rating.

In response to LaurieM's comment from Feb 24, 2009 at 2:29PM:

I forwarded Purina the link to this review and the comments. I also voiced my concern and this is the reply I have gotten so far:

"Thank you for contacting Nestlé Purina PetCare Company. We appreciate you contacting us, and expressing your feelings. Please know that they are important to us. We would like to assure you that your comments will be noted, and reported to the appropriate individuals in our Company. Again, thank you for visiting our web site."

Sounds pretty generic but hopefully it will get to the right people.

I am going to try to find a way to forward the link to this review along with the comments to Purina. There is always more power in numbers. They need to know about this right away.

My wife and I have been giving our two dogs (14 months and 2.5 years) ProPlan ever since they were off puppy chow. They have loved it the entire time. In late December we bought our first bag of the "Shredded Blend". We noticed that both have become very gassy and have been belching alot after they eat. It also seemed that they had lost some weight (which we didn't want because they were both already lean). We took them for their annual checkup yesterday and found that our older dog had dropped down to 71lbs. Last time she was weighed at Haloween she was 88lbs! Our other dog dropped from 38 to 32lbs (not nearly as much but still a bit of a concern). Their activity level has dropped (especially our older one) but we have been trying to increase their diet to regain their original weights. I am so disappointed with Purina, my wife has tried to contact them, but has not heard back. We have changed their food, and will not buy ProPlan ever again.

My wife has 4 high percentage wolf hybrids (mostly Timber wolf and Chow). They have been fed Pro Plan chicken and rice formula since they were pups. Since the switch to the formula with shreds all of the dogs have loose stools and one dog our oldest about 11yrs will actually pick out the regular food in the mix and leave behind the shreds. I find it very disappointing that Purina would sell a good product for so many years, then suddenly change it leaving many of there customer base SOL. I'm searching for another high protein food that they will eat.

I have used Chicken and Rice Proplan dryfood with out any issues for years....I tried the new shredded variiety and my dog's health began to go downhill with vomitting, loose stools, her coat began to dry out. This continued for three weeks. I initially thought she had a stomach bug, but the only change in her diet was the new shredded variety. As soon as I took her off the food it took her two weeks to get back to normal. She is doing well on Proplan high performance, but I will not be able to keep her on that for too long, since it has more protein than she needs right now. She became very run down after been given the shredded variety. I have always had a good experience with Proplan up to this...I am trying to figure out which food I should try next. I miss the old Chicken and Rice formula. MG

I'm glad that you are all sharing your experiences. Even though my dog hasn't had these issues, it's important for other dog owners to know what your pets have experienced. I'm thinking maybe I should switch now too just to be safe even though none of this has happened to my dog. Yikes.

We have a 5 year old lab who has started itching terribly, losing hair, and her coat has turned dull. Took her to the vet-nothing wrong on a visual exam- and have been doing the prescribed medicated baths for a month with no success. the only change in her life has been ProPlan's change to the shredded dog food formula. Prior to this, we have had all our dogs on Pro Plan with great results. Thank you all for sharing your experiences....this makes so much sense. I will be out looking for new food tomorrow. Any suggestions on what food has worked for those of you who have had to change?

My dog just turned 3 so maybe that is why we didn't have any problems. Good luck with your dogs and you are doing the right thing by alerting others.

So glad you are not having any of these problems. Contacted Vet - he has seen 5 other dogs in the past 10ays with similar problems. Seems the common thread is that they are all "adult dogs" (10yrs old or greater) and the change to this dog food is the only change that they have incurred. I also have been in contact with 2 other vets in the area and my groomer - all are reporting similar problems with their patients/clients. Again, I fear this is a much bigger issue that just a problem with one or two dogs.

In response to beach55's comment from Jan 10, 2009 at 2:25PM:

I am honestly stunned by your comment. Is it possible that the food you bought was contaminated? I read that a few others had a similar problem. It's so strange because my dog hasn't had any problems at all with this food. Sorry that your poor dogs got sick. Did you take them to the vet? I'd be curious to know what they said.

WARNING!!! DANGER - NEW PRO PLAN SHREDDED - DANGER!!!
I am horrified by my dogs reactions to the New Pro Plan Beef "Shredded" formula! For 13 years I have fed my Jack Russells Pro Plan Beef with no problems. After just one day on this new food they have experienced major problems! I took them off the food immediately and 2 weeks later they are still experiencing the effects - upset stomach and vomiting, greatly increased defication, and at night in particular reacting like they are on speed - anxious, twiching and scratching like their skin is onfire.
Since this started I began asking around and have heard countless stories now of similar problem ... or worse! (esp. with older dogs) If anyone has a recommendation how to counteract these problem I would be grateful if you would post it here. I have called Purina and told them of the problems - I recommend that you do the same. Their toll free # is 800-776-7526.
It is so seroius that my local pet store (after MANY complaints) is banning the product from being sold in their store - I recommend that you ask your store to do the same! I would hate to see anyone be sued over selling this stuff!

That's too bad. :( My dog seems to be doing fine on it.

For years I used Purina Pro Plan Chicken & Rice with no problems. However, since using the new "shredded" formula, my dogs have experienced a lot of problems. Not only do they have upset stomachs and obvious discomfort, but their stools are messy, and range from soft stools to diarrhea. They also defecate more often. I've kept them on this food for a while in case they'd adjust to it, but I definitely cannot use it anymore and have to switch to something else. I'm very disappointed.

My dog hasn't had any problems with it and eats it daily. So sorry that your dogs had to go through that!

CathyW wrote on Dec 17, 2008 at 10:28PM

STAY AWAY from this food. I have 3 dogs and when I brought home this new shredded blend vs. the old version of the same food I had major problems. After just one meal my Greyhound was covered in hives and my boston terrier spent the last 5 days in the vet emergency care for pancreatitis. Only my great dane ate the food and remained unscathed but at 140lbs I think she could eat just about anything and not have a reaction.

I have tried the Purina one but not the Pro plan. Have 2 dogs now. They aren't very picky, but that Purina one does make the older dog seem younger. Thanks for the review..
