Salad for Dogs

1

This expensive dog food was prescribed to my overweight Lhasa 60 days ago. She eats maybe 1 cup every 3 days. It tastes so bad she will starve herself until she can't go any longer. I feel terrible. My dog Izzy is 12 years old. The Vet convinced me to give it 60 days and I have but no more. This stuff is terrible. It's like putting your dog on lettuce for every meal. It helps them lose weight but at a heavy price. It's not worth starving my baby for 2 months for weight loss. Don't purchase this. Reduce your current dog food by 25% and see what happens.

Info from manufacturer is included belowWe have 3 cats, two of whom need to watch their weight and one who eats a piece or two at a time. They are all very particular about their dry food. Also we have two long haired cats who need hairball control. Our wonderful vet had us try a few light foods but our cats would spit the food out and would not eat. We also tried mixing half regular hairball and hairball light from another very good brand. The cats would pick out the regular hairball food and leave the light one behind. They would also try to remove the hairball light from their bowls. They would flip the bowls over and try to bury the food. We knew we needed to have a food that was less caloric than the one we were using. Our vet suggested breaking away from our previous brand and trying a new brand and type of food for the cats. We agreed to try the new brand (new to us anyway) because we trust our vet implicitly with our cats and their health. Our vet recommended Purina OM. I am so very glad we tried it!! What a terrific product!! All of our cats eat it without any issues. Even better than that is that the product has worked to help our two "chunky" cats lose the weight the vet recommended, it has helped them to maintain their body weights at their new level and it also helped to control the hairball issues. We are extremely pleased with Purina OM and are very thankful to our vet for recommending it to help ensure our cats are not only healthy but very happy as well.Description (this information is from the manufacturer):By prescription onlyPurina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management brand Feline Formulas provide balanced nutrition for safe and effective weight loss and have been formulated to achieve the following characteristics:* Low fat* Promotes acidic urine* Reduced calories* High protein:calorie ratio* High fiber Medical IndicationsDiets with these nutritional modifications have been recommended for cats with the following conditions: * Obesity* Fiber responsive colitis* Constipation* Hyperlipidemia in overweight cats* Diabetes mellitus in overweight cats* Hairballs

High quality pet food that works

We have a strictly indoor, low-activity level cat that is a little on the chunky side.  She also has a lot of problems with hairballs.  We have tried many types of foods, most of them veterinary diets (those that you buy at a vet clinic), and Purina Overweight Management has been one of the best.  It has helped her lose a little weight.  We are not expecting miracles from a cat food.  She doesn't exercise much and we don't feed her measured-out meals so we can't expect major weight loss.  It is a highly palatable diet, at least for her.  She is always excited to see the food coming, which has not been the case with other diets that we have tried.  For all of those reasons, I gave Purina OM four stars.  I couldn't give it the final star because it has not done much to help her hairballs.  It is marketed as a high fiber diet that will control hairballs but unfortunately it has not done that for our cat.  We are still on the lookout for the food that will finally control the hairballs.

My fat cats eat it but are not skinnier

My vet had us on another cat food for overweight pets but when the office chaged to this brand, he recommended it. On the other food, my cats were losing weight. On this food, they sometimes seem hungry and they have maintained their weight. They are not picky about their food so it does not mean much that they eat this food but they gobble it up twice a day. It comes in large bags so even though it is more expensive than store brands, I buy it in bulk from the vet. Since our vet is across the street from our house, it is convenient for us to buy it there. If that was not the case, I would not like having to buy it at another location as it is not stocked at our grocery store. It smells better than some foods so that is a plus. The pieces are smalls so it is easy to measure out the portions for my cats. I will continue to buy this food because it is recommended by my vet and is easy to buy.

Great dog food! I recommend!

When we first adopted our beagle corgi mix from the local Humane Society, she was just 2 years old and very obese.  Probably about 17 pounds over her ideal weight. For a human that does not sound terribly overweight but for a medium sized dog that is very unhealthy.  Lily  was almost twice the size she should have been. Anyway,.....after we adopted Lily, we immediately took her to our Vet to introduce her,  and to have our Vet examine her.  He thought she was adorable and would make a great companion and family member....except she needed to lose lots of weight.  He looked very serously into my husband's and I's eyes and said, "if she does not lose this excessive weight, we are going to lose her!"  That was enough for me to want to do something, pronto! He immediately recommended Purina OM.  He carried the product and said it was by prescription only.   It is a bit more expensive than the regular Purina dog foods, but is very worth it.  I figure it is much cheaper than the alternative--her keeping the weight on and possibly getting arthritis, cancer, a broken hip, or heart problems because of her weight. She is now a very healhty 27 lbs, and actually is sporting a waist!   Thanks, Purina, for making Purina OM.  Heartily recommended by Linda A. (and one happy beagle mix named LIly!)
