Purex Natural Elements Laundry Detergent —

Many of my friends at Viewpoints write on natural and/or organic products and I have confessed to This2ShallPass19 and LisaCarey that I don't know anyone near me who are eco-friendly.  Well, I have been using Purex laundry detergent for about 12 years and I think I am joining the ranks of those going green!  Hey, can I get some brownie points since I don't own a dryer?  I have been in my new home now for five years and made a conscious decision to not have a dryer installed.  I either line dry my clothes, weather permitting, or I do Chinese laundry indoors.  I'm conserving energy AND I'm saving money on my power bill.

I have used Purex because it hasn't caused me skin allergies like many of the other laundry detergents, Tide in particular.  Purex also tends to be about $3 cheaper per bottle than the more expensive name brands.  About two or three months ago *someone wrote a review on Purex Natural Elements, I think.  Or maybe I saw it in a store and just thought I already heard of it.  Well, when it was time to get more laundry detergent I went to Wal-Mart and got a bottle of Purex Natural Elements Ultra Concentrate.

Now remember, I haven't used many "natural" products so I was thinking this stuff would probably either stink or have no scent at all.  Well, it smells like bubble gum.  I got the linen and lilies scent.  I'm not sure if there are other scents available at this time or not.  This one smells wonderful.

The 100 FL OZ bottle yields approximately 64 loads because it is 2x concentrated.  It doesn't produce a lot of bubbles in the wash but you can tell it's working.  My clothes come out clean and they smell fresh thanks to my Ultra Downy Tahitian Waterfall fabric softener.   I saw a con that said not to be mixed with bleach, but when I did a white load I mixed mine with Clorox bleach and my clothes come out fine.  I don't know if someone had a bad experience but I just re-read the bottle and I didn't see any warning signs telling me not to mix it with bleach.  And just today, I had a laundry mishap and had to treat a stain with OxiClean Laundry Stain Remover and the Purex and OxiClean combined did just fine and it saved my Big Dog sweatshirt too!

The following is on the bottle:

  • 100% Natural cleaning ingredients.
  • Natural fragrance extracts
  • Concentrated, less waste, better for environment
  • Biodegradable formula
  • Recyclable packaging
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Free of dyes
  • Contains no phosphates

Ingredients include naturally derived cleaning agents (coconut and/or palm based surfactants), naturally softened water and fragrance with naturally derived fragrance extracts.

The bottle is made from 25% or more post consumer recycled plastic.  Purex is manufactured by the Dial Corporation.  Purex comes in a variety of fragrances but I believe as long as I can get my hands on this I will continue to use it.  I believe it costs about $5, give or take 50 cents.

Okay, after posting my review I was able to see who all had written reviews and the *someone I was making reference to would be LisaCarey.  She posted a review on September 18th.  I went back and read her review to see if I had commented and I had.  I was relatively new to Viewpoints and it showed in my comment because it was no where near as personal and funny as they are now.  And, Lisa, for the record: I wasn't able to get my hands on the Apple and Melon so I still have something to look forward to the next time I get my detergent!

You read or "heard" correctly. I chose not to have a dryer in my new home. I live in the country on private land so I don't have a neigborhood association telling me what I can and cannot do. I have a huge clothesline that is 2 lines about 60 ft. in length. I can get about 3 large loads of laundry on the lines at one time. It's also great for playing beach blanket volleyball. It's funny that I love line drying clothes now b/c growing up I despised hanging clothes out. My Daddy made us use the clotheseline whenever it was nice out to save energy. Now I am doing just that!! Thanks for reading my review!

Hey! Did you really say that you had no dryer installed in your new home. Where I come from the new homes do not even consider installing clothes lines in the yards. Personally, I love hanging my laundry outdoors, and will never remove my clothes line. I've always thought maybe I was being too old fashioned, turns out it's now called going green. Thanks! As for the Purex, thank you for bringing to light that the money spent is not necessarily the level of cleaness that will result in the laundry. And yes they are so wonderfully scented, with the same results. I have a Maytag Neptune which uses less detergent. Great review Gigiand!

yeah! more going green! i love this product and it and arm and hammer essentials really are the ONLY 2 laundry detergents I use. And I am impressed -- no dryer! Course my family would probably uprise and create mutiny if they didn't have the clothes they want when they want them.

Uh oh--girl in plastic bubble may have a leak. Is it possible that bubble girl's friend and her actually like the same product? That's wonderful--see we do have something in common besides a wonderful friendship ;+) I am dying to get my hands on the Apple and Melon scent. That is initially what I wanted but Wal-Mart didn't have it ;+(

It is a wonderful product and since I have been using Purex for 10+ years I was more than willing to try it.

Yeah, she and Thistooshallpass19 have been "teaching" me about going green. I might turn into the Jolly Green Giant someday ;+)

That sounds similar to what happened to my siblings and me when my mother tried to use Tide. We all broke out! I think she ended up using something like Cheer or All. I know for a while she was using Dreft b/c nothing seemed to go well for me but she didn't like paying the steeper price. Now since all the kids are gone I think my daddy uses whatever is the cheapest when he goes shopping! He might even be using Purex b/c it is pretty cheap!!

This is the same detergent and scent that I use! Doesn't smell wonderful? I am so glad to see you starting to go green :)

PattyTherre wrote on Feb 24, 2009 at 10:34PM

We like this too!

This is one of our household favorites. Lisa went Eco- friendly years ago.

This sounds like a really great product and it is environmental friendly. I honestly don't know the name of our laundry detergent. We order some organic product from an online store. Braeden has the most sensitive skin I could ever imagine, probably a lot like you, and he would break out in rashes and hives every time we used store brands. Mom found the website, sent us a thing of the detergent and it was a blessing in a bottle. Since he never reacted to it we decided to stick with it. If it weren't for his sensitive skin I would probably be willing to try this stuff; especially that apple and melon scent but I won't sacrifice my poor baby's skin for the sake of something that smells good. ~Anna Leigh

Great review, Gigi! I had wondered about Purex but had never tried it. Alas, we have no place at our condo building where we can hang anything outside but I hang most of my clothes to dry on hangers down in the laundry room (we have a couple bars setup for that) and they come out perfectly with hardly any wrinkles at all. Take care and have fun in your "Big Dog" sweatshirt!

I haven't had much luck with Purex but I never tried this one!

JovialCougar wrote on Feb 23, 2009 at 8:37PM

I've noticed Purex is usually cheaper. Maybe because they don't advertise as much?
