Over the years I have found that among all the choices that we have for gifts to new mom's there are a few gifts for new moms that can't go wrong. Having been a new mom four times here are my picks for the perfect gifts just for that new mother among your friends and family.

  1. Boppy Pillow:  For me, nursing or not, this pillow was a life saver.  You can use it to help support the baby especially while nursing, as often times your arms get tired as well as different positions are needed.  Other uses include supporting baby while holding him or her, especially after a C-section.  As the baby gets a little older it can also be used to "prop" the baby up so they can look around. It also helps provide support as you wrap it around babies just starting to sit up.  So many uses, just one item.
  2. Nursing Bra:  With or without nursing, the first few weeks after your pregnancy you will find that a nursing bra is most helpful. If nursing, it allows you to still wear a bra and have support for those rapidly filling breast.  If you are not nursing, you still need the support and care, especially at night that a good nursing bra can provide.  After baby all kinds of changes occur to your body, and this can help you get your shape back and provide support during all the changes.  There are many to choose from but you may want to look at a Motherhood Maternity Double Layer Bra which provides comfort, support and a tank to protect your outer clothing.
  3. Slippers and Pajama's: What women wear to bed BB (before baby) and what they wear after baby may vary greatly. But one thing is certain, new mom's need comfortable pajamas and slippers to wear both for ease of nursing, getting up in the middle of the night and for those unexpected guests that show up bearing gifts before the new mom has had a chance to take a shower and get dressed for the day.  Comfortable clothing should be weather appropriate and two pieces so new mom's can have variety by mixing and matching.  Sleepwear/Lounge-wear is best, it is almost like wearing clothing. Full figured women will love the comfort of Lane Bryant sleepwear and those on a budget will find Hanes Sleepwear comfortable to wear and comfortable to pay for.
  4. Relaxation Music: Classical music, jazz, blues, or my preference for relaxation is New Age/Nature sounds music.  One of my favorite CD's is a "New Age in Relaxation.  Even if mom can't get enough sleep, she can lie down for a few minutes and relax with any one of her favorite sounds.  Infants also find the sounds of water and wind relaxing, who know's maybe that perfect relaxation CD will relax more than just mom and give both baby and mom a chance to sleep.
  5. Tummy Lotion:  Massaging a new mom's tummy helps it heal faster, become firmer and helps you get back in shape faster, as well as moisturizes those dry patches for showering in the hospital shower as well as the dry skin that occurred due to the many devices hooked up to your belly.  Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Tummy Butter  is a wonderful option for stretch marks, but other good alternatives include Curel and Eucerin.
  6. Crock-pot: May seem like a strange gift for a new mom, but she may not have one, and if she doesn't she needs one.  Especially if she has other children in the house.  With a crock-pot new moms do not have to worry about meals.  Many items brought over by family members can be placed in there to warm, as well as many other dishes.  I cook everything from soups and stews to roasts and chicken in my Rival Crockpot.  You can throw everything in the crock-pot or just the roast or chicken and add things throughout the day when you have a minute. Many of them come with roasting pans and even cookbooks.  Crock-pots aren't just for soup anymore! If your busy new mom already has a crock-pot, purchase a new one pot/crock-pot cookbook for her so she doesn't have to think about what she will cook for dinner tonight. Some of my favorites are from Better Homes and Gardens: Slow Cooker Recipes or Fix It and Forget It.
  7. Greeting Cards/Blue Mountain Membership:  A busy new mom doesn't have time or the desire to drag the baby out to the store to purchase greeting cards. But she has many reasons to need them, like Thank You cards for gifts, baby announcements, and simply staying in touch with all the well-wishers.  Purchase for your favorite new mom a box of assorted printed greeting cards as well as a membership to Bluemountain.com (either the full membership or just e-greetings).  Armed with these a new mom is prepared for every good wish and beautifully wrapped present that comes her way.
  8. Stroller Frame: This may seem like an odd gift for a new mom but it is a life saver.  The Graco Snug Rider Infant Car Seat Stroller Frameis lightweight, easy to use and fits all Graco infant car seats as well as many others.  You just have to try yours to see if it fits.  It is so much easier than a regular stroller, takes up less space in the car and makes it easier for those first few months to travel with your baby. You simply take them out of the car and pop them into the frame.  A friend of mine got it for my fourth child and I wish I had one for all three!
  9. Baby Carrier/Sling:  There are several to choose from.  They are wonderful for keeping baby close by, it also cuts down on strangers touching baby and they encourage bonding as well as are soothing to baby.  My favorite was the Bjorn front carrier, and the Infantino Front Carrier. To make your own decision, visit a Guide to Choosing a Baby Carrier.
  10. Gift Cards:  This are often not used as a gift or must have for new moms, but they can provide moms with so many different opportunities.  You can help mom get a massage, a manicure/pedicure, order dinner, buy a new outfit once she start feeling better, get a hair cut, or just treat herself to something new like candies, cookies, flowers, bath and body, cosmetics, wine, and just about anything else, even baby supplies.

My Viewpoint: There is a great number of choices available to treat that new mom to something special, but with these top ten favorite choices you can not go wrong, and the new mom in your life will be appreciative of the thought that goes into each of these gift.

Lisa, This is excellent. The crockpot was a unique but really insightful addition to your list.

Gift cards were the ones I always liked best! That way I could use them later to get the things I really needed!

Fabulous ideas! I never would have thought of a crock pot, but I can see how helpful that would be to a new mom. :)

What an inspired list! You deserve a thousand helpful votes for this especially from us clueless people who have never had kids but sometimes want to buy gifts for new mothers. I usually go the gift card route which never seems to fail but the other things sound great too.
