Bottom-Line: In the end Prime is about that one would except from this sort of light romantic comedy: a predictable, somewhat clichéd but entertaining move.

The central theme behind Prime is babies, when to have them and with whom.  Thurman portrays photo stylist Rafi Gardet a recent (37-year old) divorcee who is seeing a therapist, one Lisa Metzger (Meryl Streep - The Bridges if Madison County), who also happens to be (very) Jewish.  Rafi meets David Bloomberg (Byran Greenberg - October Road), a young, handsome, charming Jewish bloke, who despite her better nature Rafi starts dating, despite the fact that she now wants a baby.  And she fears that David will not be able to give her one; be a responsible father, and provider; after all he is only 23-years-old.   But the sparks are flying between the two so...

Rafi confides all of this to her therapist not knowing the Lisa Metzger and David Bloomberg are mother and son.  David meanwhile leans on his crazy loser pal Morris (Jon Abrahams - Boston Public) who can never seem to get a second date with a woman.  Eventually Lisa, who uses her maiden name in her practice, figures out the Rafis' David and her own son are one in the same.

My Viewpoint

I am lukewarm about Prime; the movie written and directed by Ben Younger (Toothpaste), presents us with a light-heart, predictable movie that is little more than eye-candy for the soul.  There is nothing deep and profound here, nothing earth shattering; Prime fails to invoke deep emotion on either side of fence.  I wanted to feel for Rafi, but there was not enough invested in her character to draw me in, and David is just short of boring altogether.

Uma inhabits her role as the hip thirty-something professional woman in her prime with ease.  Given her past roles, Rafi must have seemed like a cakewalk.  And always Uma was alluring even shod in frazzled hair and a t-shirt.  And of course Ms. Streep is well Ms. Streep on of the greatest actresses of this or any other generation.

Prime does have some mature and thoughtful moments as romance blossoms between and older woman in search of a new beginning and screaming babies, and a younger man who has yet to figure out what he wants to be.  In the end Prime is about that one would except from this sort of light romantic comedy: a predictable, somewhat clichéd but entertaining movie.
