In a former life, Prilosec was a heartburn medication that could only be purchased with a physician's prescription.  Like so many other former prescription meds, Prilosec is now available over-the-counter and it is also used for purposes other than heartburn.

Prilosec (generic name: omeprazole) works...

I took Prilosec and had OD symptoms even though I was on a regular dose. I was on 20mg a day. Doctors would not admit that this could occur. I am 24, highly active and am now going through the rebound effect. I was supposed to be married this spring but am still sick from it.

Symptoms were:

Prilosec OTC became my husband's standby when he ran out of his prescription for Zantac 150 mg.  Both can be obtained over the counter now, but in the case of his prescription, it was cheaper to get it at the pharmacy than buy over the counter.  His doctor would not refill his prescription without an office visit (dumb since he has been on this for several years), so that led to him trying Prilosec OTC.  Why switch?  Because I already had some at the house and it worked for me so he decided why not?

Prilosec OTC comes in boxes of 14, 28, and 42 count.  The product works by blocking the acid...

OK, I had a severe attack of heartburn this morning, and luckily for me, I could reach for my little Prilosec tab to ease the awful pain.  I probably only have heartburn one or maybe two times a month, but when I do, it is severe.

After taking this over the counter med, the pain is gone in less than 10 minutes.  I have never had an episode that Prilosec didn't handle.  Therefore, I can truly say that I rely on Prilosec to ease the pain, and I keep it handy in my bathroom cabinet as well as on my office desk.

It is a little pricey for a package, but then I only have to take it once or twice a month,...

After years of trying everything over the counter to help my acid reflux, I found this wonderful little pill!  I used to wake up in the middle of the night with acid shooting up my nose from my throat.  It was horrible.  I started out taking Pepcid, that didn't work.  I tried Tagament, that worked temporarily.  Then I found Zantac, I started out taking 25 mgs, and increasing it over a period of time to 300 mgs.  Knowing this wasn't healthy for me to take so much per day, I went on another search.  I had heard others talk about Prilosec, and decided to try it.  Oh my goodness.  This is...

I have suffered from gastro esophageal reflux for years. I have used used many over the counter products to try to control my condition.  I have found the only medication that really keeps my condition in check is Prilosec OTC.  You only have to take one once per day rather than only when your condition flairs up. There are a few downfalls to this product.  It is costly if you have to take it daily, but none of the competitors medication for this condition are any cheaper. Also, if you don't take a daily continuous, but rather for 14-30 days and then stop, it seems like your condition might...

Several years ago my husband began suffering from pains in his chest area.  Not being sure of what this new burning pain in his chest was, he made an appointment with his doctor and was taken in right away.  His doctor diagnosed him with having Acid Reflux disease.  He prescribed him a very expensive medicine that he would have to take for the rest of his life.  After checking with or insurance company and finding out that they would not cover the expense of that prescription, his doctor advised him to try Prilosec OTC to see if it would help.  Well, thank goodness it did.  It began to work...

I used to take Nexium. Now I take Prilosec. Prilosec works just as well. My new insurance company would not cover the Nexium pills. I cannot say I take it exactly as directed. I take it when I need it or when I know I am going to be eating something that most liiely will cause a flare up. I love how small the pills are too. Easy to swallow.

My doctor told me to take them anytime I am going to take an OTC like Aleve or Excederin. He says it will protect your stomach from damage.

It is expensive. I really feel like they could lower the price by cutting down on the packaging. I find them hard to...

I had a gastric lcer several years ago after taking ibuprofen for many years to alleviate the pain caused by a herniated lumbar disc.  The ibuprofen relieved my pain quite well. Unfortunately it caused my gastric ulcer, which required surgery to repair and a long hospital stay, which proved to be very expensive. I was extremely fortunate to have had an excellent surgeon and have a minimally noticible abdominal scar.  After my hospitalization my doctor, an internal mediine specialist, disussed meical options with me regarding actions and medications I could take in order to prevent getting another...

I,at one point was a nurse and single mother. Needless to say,I, was severely stressed out. Anyway ,I ,ended up in hospital and a bleeding ulcer! Prilosec,at this time was a new medication, and no generic was yet available,so my physician prescribed this in the hospital and for everyday use for home, recovering, and thereafter. The Prilosec not only aided in healing my ulcer but stopped reflux, and indigestion. To this day,I, remain taking this, now generic is available called,Omeprazole. Now mind you this was safe for me,but please please,CHECK WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN,as you need liver function test on...

Having Reflux as part of my IBS and considering a plain baked potato can cause it, prilosec has been wonderful.  I've been thru a lot of them and we finally stopped at this one.  Since I also have to take Predisone and Mobic for pain and lung problems, prilosec has been a wonderful cure for the stomach problems they can create.  I wouldn't want to do without what I call the holy trinity.

It's simple to take however if you are like the Other Half who takes theirs after you get the acid reflux you are going to hurt because it suppresses production it does not absorb it.  It needs to be taken...

Prilosec is the best anti heart burn medicine out there.  I have tried everything and this is the only thing that works.  I am on many other medications and there is no problem adding Prilosec to the mix.  Its says to take for two weeks but personally I needed to take it for a month.  Then I was completely heartburn free for two months.  Then I just started the routine over again.  There are no side effects to this med.  You start feeling heart burn relief with in about five days.  If you have heartburn problems Prilosec is the med to take.  Prilosec is also the cheapest heart burn medicine... review »

I have suffered with GERD for years.  I have tried many prescriptions and over the counter medication and Prilosec over the counter is the only drug that has helped me,  I have tried many other over the counter medications and I would have to take like two - three pills a day and would still have heartburn.  I was not able to take Prilosec when I was pregnant and I never got rid of my heartburn the whole nine months.  I was looking forward to being able to take that over anything.  The only complaint is that the OTC is more expensive than the prescription version for those that have insurance. ...

Prilosec's OTC is hands down the best product i have tried to relieve heartburn. While it cost a little more then other heartburn remedies,it is well worth the price.Follow directions on the box and your heartburn will stay away for a long time.It is a seven day box or you can buy a value pack with 3 boxes at a reduced price then buying single boxes. The old adage you get what you pay for ,is definitely true with this product.Since first purchasing this product i have not purchased any other Brand.i think if you try it you will agree with me.Prilose.It's the little purple pill that works.

Prilosec over the counter medication is a great product for controlling acid reflux and heart burn.   I have to take it every day to keep my my symptoms at bay but occasionally have to suppliment with a pepsid AC or a 2nd prilosec half way through the day.   The trick is to take it about an hour before you get the symptoms.  Once you start getting them the medicine will not be that effective.   The prilosec is a bit expensive so you might want to get the generic.
