Prilosec OTC Review

Prilosec OTC — 

Excess stomach acid can cause great discomfort. Heartburn is one common problem associated with out of control stomach acid, but GERD/acid reflux is even worse because it can lead to lesions in the throat and other health issues. To stop heartburn and associated problems, I sometimes reach for Prilosec OTC, a remedy for stomach pain.

Drug Commentary:

Prilosec OTC helps relieve stomach acid problems by blocking the production of stomach acid. This makes it a little different from other antacids, which usually work to neutralize the stomach acid already present. Prilosec OTC accomplishes its mission through the active ingredient Omeprazole Magnesium. This ingredient is released on a delayed basis, and this means that Prilosec OTC can help relieve problems associated with stomach acid for a full day.  

I have the occasional bout with excess stomach acid, usually the result of overeating or consuming foods and beverages that are either spicy or high in acid. I have an assortment of antacid products that I use to eliminate the problem, based on severity. If the issue is minor, I will rely on Tums, Rolaids, or a similar over the counter drug to relieve the discomfort. But when stomach acid has me in its grip, I often have to reach for something more powerful and this is when Prilosec OTC can prove to be beneficial. It gets to the core of the problem by blocking the production of acid within the stomach- something that most over the counter antacids are not designed to do.

Prilosec OTC works well, but it does have one drawback: It doesn't provide immediate relief. Prilosec OTC is intended more as a preventive measure against heartburn and in order for it to take affect the way it should, it has to be taken for several days in a row. Once the stomach is primed with this drug, there should be no more worries with heartburn. It prevents the problem before it begins.

Bottom- Line Viewpoint:

Prilosec OTC is a very good product for stomach acid relief, but since it doesn't provide immediate relief, it has limited use. I still prefer Pepcid AC for quick relief, but Prilosec OTC is better for relief in the long- term. It is rather expensive, but for prevention of acid reflux, the cost is worth it.
