If you don't have to be there at a certain time....Priceline is perfect. The only drawback is you don't get to chose the airline or the flight! You do, however, get to chose the date and the airport, which to me are the two most important factors.
My husband, recently, had to fly back to Illinois from Alabama, rather quickly. His father was having open heart surgery. I went to the major airline websites and they wanted approximately $500-800+ for this round trip ticket plus he needed to rent the car for the week! I told hubby that it was just out of our price range as we are planning a vacation next month and daughter is graduating this month! Well, I tried one more thing, I went to kayak.com and they found a price at priceline.com for $300 and told me to bid on it so I did. Would you know that included a car as well! Now, as I mentioned earlier, it did not tell us who the car was with or the airline, but it did use the airport and the dates I wanted so I was willing to take whatever they were willing to give us for that price! He ended up flying American Airlines into Chicago and getting and Avis car. He flew from Mobile Airport at 1:40 pm and got into Chicago at 4pm....straight through. No layovers!!! What!!! Are you kidding!!! Nope...not kidding!!! That was awesome! Got his car and went on to his moms! Then he left Chicago at 10:45 am and was back home in Mobile by 12:55. Not a bad trip. No layovers anywhere! Bussed to and from his car at Ohare! I was leary of them not having his reservations, you hear about that every now and then, so after I made the reservations through priceline, I went directly to American Airlines website and reserved his seat on the plane to be sure he was registered and he was there. Got him the front seat on the plane..which worked well with his long legs and then I called Avis and made sure he showed up for his car and he was there! He was all set to leave in just a few days and saved us hundreds of dollars! Wow! Would do it again too so longs as I didn't have to be anywhere at any particular time! We even did the printing of his boarding pass and he never had to go through any counters or anything! Just went through the security check and straight to the plane since he took his one piece of luggage! Smooth as it could be!
