Intro
If there's one thing that sums me up, it's "If there's a will, there's a way." Some people call it stubbornness; so be it. I'm in the midst of a major kitchen renovation right now, and I currently have no kitchen sink, stove, or dishwasher. I am making do with a bathroom sink and tub, crock pot, and microwave. It's like camping with a few luxuries. There was one appliance I used to rely on in the past, but after going through several, I hadn't had one in several years, and that's an electric skillet. I've been craving spaghetti, one of my staples, and knew the electric skillet would be a great way to not only make my sauce, but would help me out until I can get another stove in place, probably at least two more weeks for that, and another three after that for countertops. After searching through the choices at Super Target, I settled on the Presto Electric Skillet, 16 inch.

Some Assembly Required
By my own shortsightedness, I didn't think to look the electric skillet over before taking it out of the Presto box. I waited until I needed the skillet right that very minute, and realized I needed a screwdriver to put the handles on. Finding anything in this house right now isn't an easy chore, and luckily either a Phillips or standard would do. I found a screwdriver eventually, and the handles both went on very easily. I wasn't exactly sure what the instructions meant, saying to find the screws stored in the "mounting projections on the skillet body," but it turns out they were just already screwed into where the handles were going, and just needed to be taken out to fit the handle on. Instructions were provided for putting the lid together as well, but it was already assembled for me, causing me to wonder if maybe they aren't always like that.

The Cooking Experience

The Presto Electric Skillet heated up much more quickly than I thought it would. My sauce and meatballs weren't in danger of boiling over, as the 16 inch skillet is incredibly large, making my sauce barely even cover the surface of the skillet, but it was beginning to get too thick, and I had to water it down a little. As you can see in the picture I included, with no countertops, I was forced to put the skillet on a plastic sawhorse, alongside a circular saw, but when it came time to serve it, I just had to detach the heating element and move it to the table.

The Clean-up
It's a huge benefit to be able to totally immerse the Presto Electric Skillet, meaning you can wash it completely in the kitchen sink or can put it through dishwater. Unfortunately, I have neither right now. No matter, washing it in the bathroom sink was easy with the nonstick interior. The lid was easy to clean as well. The only difficulty was that it was so large, I had a hard time manipulating it in the bathroom sink, but I'm thinking most people won't be cleaning it in such a way, at least I hope not. It literally sponged clean, despite having the sauce to the point of boiling and thickening up.

The Bottom Line
"If there's a will, there's a way." I wanted a spaghetti dinner, and the Presto Electric Skillet was a definite help in making my spaghetti dinner sans a working kitchen. I even found a way to cook my spaghetti in the microwave. I know once I'm back and going again, I'll still be using it, as it's just so much easier sometimes to cook this way, as compared to using the oven.

Very informative. I love electric skillets. Currently mine is broke so I need to puchase a new one. The electric skillet is the most used aplliance in my kitchen.

I have an old one. Love it. If it ever goes belly up, I'm sure getting another. Very handy.
