Now I consider myself a pretty intelligent guy; rocket scientist no (but I suppose I could be if I had wanted to be), but a fairly intelligent man as far as humans go. So why for the life of me can I not figure out what the hell Premonition (2007), staring Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon, was all about? I mean really, how convoluted can one make a plot before the audience just loses all interest? Premonition should be the case study in how not to make an intriguing film!
My Viewpoint
In an attempt to be clever Premonition ended up a rather convoluted and unmanageable mess from a viewer's standpoint. The movie was hard to follow almost for the start and halfway into the 96 minute movie I lost interest in even trying. Part of the problem was the poorly put together script; there was not unifying thread that held all of the disjointed scenes together. Another problem was the sequence of events; they did not unfold in any kind of logical sequence that would at least helped follow the plot. And finally, the acting was a rather noticeable problem. Bullock spends most of the movie with the same stricken look on her face. Hello, is there anyone home? Add to this mix that fact that the director couldn't make his mind whether he wanted her (Bullock) to be the beat-down housewife or the sexy temptress and you have the formula for a pretty befuddling mix.
In the final analysis Premonition is a confusing, head scratching (I know redundant term) mess, a riddle, wrapped inside a puzzle that cannot be solved, at least by this reviewer. First-time Director Mennan Yapo and novice screenwriter Bill Kelly trapped themselves with this thriller wannabe can't figure how to get out. Their dreadfully conceived finale, while visually appealing, leaves a lot of loose plotlines swinging in the preverbal wind and left me-and no doubt any audience of moviegoers-dazed dazed, confused, and pondering the future of Sandra Bullock!
