Great for helping puppies learn how to walk properly on a leash

5

The Premire Gentle Leader Harness is an excellent choice for helping a puppy learn how to walk properly when leashed. I absolutely love this product. First, the material is smooth and does not irritate my puppy's sensitive skin. Second, I really like that this harness is adjustable. It is important to have a harness that will grow with my puppy so I can maximize my investment. This harness is very easy to get on and off of my puppy which is important as he does not stay in one place for a very long period of time. Finally, I really like how the Premire Gentle Leader Harness gently leads my puppy. This product has really changed my perspective about harnesses and how effective their at at teaching a dog how to properly walk on a leash. I like that this harness do not choke my puppy and it truly gently guides him as he is walking. Overall, I am very impressed with the Premire Gentle Leader Harness and recommend it to other dog owners.

Sturdy, durable, good training tool.

I understand that different dogs require different tools when being trained. My previous dog was an happy, loving dalmatian who loved to go on walks, and even more, loved to pull on the leash! It would take more energy to hold her back than to take the actually walk. Additionally, her excitement level would skyrocket when passing by another dog. We used a metal choke chain for years, and it worked well for obedience training. Then, we tried body harnesses, which just gave her more power to pull us with. Finally, I saw this product advertised late at night on one of those infomercials. I was amazed and purchased one the next day (that was almost seven or eight years ago!) Now, my dog was only about 45 pounds, but boy was she strong and determined! I started her training immediately with the Gentle Leader, and could see the results right away. Don't get me wrong, it is NOT a magic wand and your dog will not be Lassie just because of this product. She really disliked the band around her nose for quite some time, so, to get her used to it, I would put it on her and play fetch with the tennis ball. That helped to not only associate the leader with a positive activity, it helped her focus on something other than the head harness. This product is really nice because you can choose from two designs: one is like the one shown above and it allows the dog to open their mouths to pant, drink water, etc...The other version will act like a muzzle if the dog lunges on the leash and use their own force to keep the mouth shut. It also is designed so that if the nose band happens to come off the face or somehow break off, the collar that goes behind the ears will prevent your dog from getting off the leash (this was a huge concern of mine because my dog would play keep-away if you tried to catch her). Finally, this head collar is surprisingly strong and very durable. Even though there are one or two plastic parts, which I usually do not trust, it has lasted me for all these years. I now have a puppy who tends to get the head collar off and chews it-but it hasn't broke yet!

Gentle Leader- walking harness

5

I purchased the gentle leader at a pet store two years ago and it has been fantastic. I have a three year old dog who is half my weight, very energetic, and very strong. He is a good dog but terrible at walking because he pulls extremely hard. I've used choke-chains, pinch collars, harnesses and various other tools for walking. The gentle leader gives me more control than any other harness or collar I've ever tried. It is based on the concept of the horse harness in that the horse (or dog) goes where his nose goes. Additionally, the gentle leader is exactly what it purports to be: a gentle leader; if my dog pulls,, the gentle leader doesn't choke or harm him, rather, it pulls his nose down to his chest causing him to slow down or stop. My dog got used to it fairly quickly and doesn't really mind it at all. It may bother him a little, but it's to about the same extent that an uncomfortable seat-belt bothers a passenger in a car. I love the gentle leader, it has been a wonderful tool and allows for much more enjoyable walks with my dog.

The Gentle Leader didn't work for us.

My dog is a hyper 15 lb yorkie-poo, about 4 years old. He mostly runs in the backyard, but we do like to take him for walks or runs occasionally. When we do that, he is constantly pulling on the leash, basically making himself out of breath. When I read about the Gentle Leader, I thought it would be the perfect solution. I read the instructions carefully, even trying to train him like it says, but the leash would not stay on him. Within a matter of minutes, he could wriggle out of it. My husband looked at it also and tried, but the same thing happened. I think it is just not right for our dog. I have seen and read about people who love it and works great for their dogs, but I would be wary of it, especially if you have a smaller breed. They have different sizes for different breeds and dogs, so just make sure you are using the right one. I had no problem returning it, so I am glad I gave it a try. I wish it worked because the concept makes sense.

I stopped our English Pointer from pulling almost instantly

5

The Premier Gentle Leader is fantastic.  My girlfriends 45 lb English Pointer, Stormy, would pull her around the neighborhood before we bought this.  Now, Angie walks with Stormy, not runs after her.  We noticed the change almost instantly.  It worked so well, that our friend bought one for her Boxer mix, with the same results.  Lucky walked calmly with it the first time.  Both dogs tried to get it off their faces until they became used to it, but it was not a major issue.  I highly recommend the Premier Gentle Leader if your dog pulls you around the neighborhood when you walk him/her.

I can't imagine walking my dog with out it!

We have a chocolate lab, who is big and akward. I'm small (5'6 and 105 lbs). I refuse to let my "dog walk me" and with this system, that can't happen!  We did the puppy class, and he did great, but as he's gotten bigger (and into his "adolecence/rambunctious stage" of 6-24 months), he's getting stronger and more currious.  This keeps him by my side, and I barely have to use my forearms to walk him.  If he pulls at all, it's just a snap of the wrist and he's right by my side again. I give him treats when he comes back to my side, so he's learning to love it!   It did requiredhim getting used to it (he doesn't freak out any more like he used to), but it's SO worth it!  You may have to get used to people asking why "he's wearing a muzzle" and from stares from the "animal rights finatics" who think this system is cruel and injust, but they're the ones being walked by their dogs who are out of control!  I couldn't imagine walking a large dog with out it!  It doesn't hurt, he can still bark, drink, eat, and chew on bones, he just can't pull you around towards the other dog across the busy parking lot while you're trying to get him and your four-year-old and 8 year-old boys into the car!

Makes walking so much easier!

I bought a gentle leader for each of my dogs. I had a 1 year old Anatolian Shepher/Lab mix who was good on a leash as a puppy, but started pulling as she got bigger. This literally stopped her pulling on the very first use. Not only did it stop the pulling on walks, but it is great for any public place we take her. Because she knows that we are completely in control she doesn't not every try to chase, jump, bark or anything else when excited in public situations. We call it her "good behavior" collar! I tried it as well on my Husky/Shepherd mix. She was already 5 years old and has always pulled like crazy on the leash. After trying to used it for a few months we had to stop using it on her as she fought it the whole time and her nose is skinny enough that no matter how tight it was she could get out of it. She would get her paws up and pull on it until it came of. I would say she is a rare exception. As long as your dog doesn't have a super short or skinny nose I don't think they could get out of this. I would expect it to work on 95% or more dogs. Excellent product - easy to use!

Gentle leader is amazing!

I couldn't imagine walking my dog with out the gentle leader! I own a 70 lb chocolate lab and taking her for a walk or run before the gentle leader, was quite a chore. I had purchased a pinch collar prior to the gentle leader and it didn't decrease the pulling and tugging at all. Finally out of desperation, I marched to the pet store and came across the gentle leader. The very first time I put the gentle leader on my dog, the difference was amazing. My dog didn't tug or pull at all. After a few times of wearing it, my dog even started walking calmly next to me. I can walk and run with ease and I no longer worry about my dog taking me for a ride when she sees a squirrel or cat. Thank you gentle leader, I now have a well behaved dog!

The Gentle Leader lets me walk my dog again

5

I have a big dog with lots of energy and have always had a hard time walking him, especially when we cross another dog, person, squirrel, bird, really anything. When I got pregnant I was not able to control him anymore and when we are the humane society for some dog training they recommended the gentle leader. We bought it and it worked! It keeps our dog from pulling away from me. I am able to take him for a walk without worrying about him getting away from me. When I couldn't find it, I went out and bought another one, its become something I can't go without when I'm out with my dog. And now that I have a little kid, I'm able to push the stroller and walk the dog at the same time. Our dog is a 100 pound lab and this worked for us.

Kept my dog under control

4

We have a very rambunctious Labrador and have difficulty taking her for a walk because she pulls on the leash so hard. Our vet recommended the Gentle Leader. It definitely helped keep our dog from pulling. She was much more under control in our hands. Although it looks complicated, it is actually quite easy to put on. One note about it is that it goes around the mouth so it looks like it keeps the dog from biting. It does not do this but many people will assume you have a dog that bites. This can be a positive thing if you or your dog doesn't like to have people come up to you. The biggest negative is that my dog did not like ti around her nose and she would often stop during our walks to rub her nose in the grass or rub her paw over her nose. I tried many times to adjust it but to no avail. So, it definitely helped control our dog but created a whole new set of issues while we walked. Good luck!
