Not an Everyday Purchase

It's not everyday that you buy a new dining table, but we just took the plunge and purchased a new Montego Pedestal Dining Table from Pottery Barn. Our old dining table was a holdover from our last house and never really fit in our new (smaller) space. We did a bunch of research looking for a high-quality, low cost dining table...checking out all of the usual suspects: Crate and Barrel, Restoration Hardware and a bunch of high-end furniture stores. We always had our eye on the one at Pottery Barn because it was perfect...we just didn't like the price tag ($1499). Well, after much discussion, we got over the price and made the purchase.

The Montego Pedestal Dining Table

This is an absolutely beautiful table and now one of the nicest pieces of furniture in our home. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of P. Barn stuff because it feels overpriced for the quality. But not this piece. It is solid mahogany/hardwood and has a beautiful distressed finish. We got the table in the "Espresso" color and it has a rich dark stain that hides some of the surface scratches my kids have already put in the table (uggh!). It also has a very elegant pedestal base and is even "finished" on the underneath side. No detail was spared in making this a high-end piece of furniture.

The Montego table is also very practical for our family of four. The pedestal base ensures that everyone can get their chair (or high chair) around the table. And with the included extension leaf, we can fit six people with no problem. My only minor gripe is that the extension leaf is a standalone piece, and does not fold away under the table. That means you have to store it in the closet, which is not ideal. But, it is almost effortless to get the extension in (which is not always the case with those things).

Pottery Barn has some nice Montego Dining Chairs as well, but we opted to get the Aaron chairs from them, instead. They accent the table nicely and fit very well.

The Bottom Line

This is a wonderful, elegant table that we are very happy to have in our home. And despite the high price tag for a Pottery Barn piece, we have no buyer's remorse!

It's nice to see you back writing reviews. I didn't realize how long you were behind the scenes and not out here reviewing!
