The 693 kit comes with the fixed base, and the plunge base as well as the motor. The Porter Cable 690 series is still an industry standard. Yes, there are better routers, fancier, more powerful routers, but there always seems to be a place for the Porter Cable 690 series of routers. The 690 is truely a work horse in the shop. While many (including myself) have larger routers in router tables, and smaller trim routers for detail work, the 690 has always been a great all purpose router. It was the "go to" router in the model shops I worked with (some of the units were from the early 70's) and is in mine as well. It has multiple bases for the same motor - fixed base, plunge base, and D handled base. There are bushing sets available, dust collection sub bases and the Porter Cable micro adjust edge guide to name just a few of the accessories that fit the 690. (The edge guide, though expensive, is a well made and useful accessory) My set is used on a regular basis (not professionally) and is over 10 years old. It has needed no maintenance other than cleaning and runs like new.
