The Vibe is an excellent automobile, but not that great in snow.

My husband and I decided on a Vibe because we needed the room for camping gear, but I didn't want a huge car.  I like the ability to fold down all the seats, giving us plenty of room for furniture, christmas trees, camping gear (not all at once), and any other items I would NEVER have been able to fit in my old Malibu.   It drives smoothly and gets great gas mileage. I have three big complaints though.  First, the headlights are not very good.  They don't cover enough area to see well.  Second, strong winds knock the car all over the place.  I've learned to compensate, but it is annoying.  Third, and most important, is that this car is HORRIBLE in snow.  The first winter I had it, if the snow on the road was thick, it would start sliding into a 360 for no reason.  I ended up putting two huge bags of cat litter in the back, and that helped.  Snow also tends to get really packed in the wheel wells, which may have contributed to the spinning issues.   I still love the car, but winter lasts nearly half the year here in Michigan, so I'm a bit disappointed (and sometimes terrified).

Good review! What exactly is your gas mileage? People always want to know that nowadays.

I have a couple of comments regarding your experience with this car. First, you can augment your headlights with a device called "The Rayzer." It is a secondary lighting unit that mounts on the inside of your windshield. It was written up on page 118 of the May 2009 issue of "Car & Driver" magazine. The company's Web site is:

www.rayzerwidebeams.com

I've not used The Rayzer and only just read about it a couple days ago. It's pricy but maybe it's something you can consider.

As for snow traction, that is strongly affected by tires. Talk to a good tire dealer about tires that can handle the snow. Where you live, it may be smart to have separate summer and winter tires. This is also a pricy option but spending $700 on a set of wheels and snow tires is MUCH better than breaking a bone in a car accident.

Anyway, good review... thanks for sharing!
