I was only recently introduced to the concept of using a flash drive for data storage within the past year.  Where I work we introduced a new reporting software program for teachers to complete their paperwork on.  This system was made to utilize a USB flash drive to store the program and the data to allow the staff portability of their work.  After getting my hands on them and seeing how easy they were to use, I also began using a flash drive for various files.

So as the time came for the teachers to receive their anticipated program, our IT guy ordered a huge load of the Pleomax 2GB USB Drive for their use.  I recall he bought a bundle for around $15-$20 each through tigerdirect which seemed pretty reasonable to me considering the capacity.

You have how many kids n there?

With a 2GB capacity, this Pleomax Flash drive has enough room to fit a ton of files.  Each of my classroom teachers could hold not only their reporting program, but a variety of back up files and reports that the system created…. And most had plenty of room remaining at the end of the school year.  I began using one right about the time my home computer was about to give out on me, so I was able to load all my important documents onto the drive.  This included about a year and a half of my kids’ pictures and a smattering of other necessary files.  I still had about 5% of the memory remaining after all that.  I also was able to use this flash drive when I gave a presentation for a conference this winter.  It was nice placing it on a flash so that if I thought of something last minute that needed to be fixed or added, I had the option to do so.

Start me up

The Flash drive is compatible with USB ports, of which most modern computers have at least 6-8 of.  In general I never had any problems with getting the drives to work with any given computer.  Out of the lot of around 50 drives I would say I had 3-5 that did not function properly.  Some just needed re-formatting but I have at least 2 that just don’t work anymore.  Keeping in mind that a USB flash drive works similar to any other memory drive, it can be susceptible to viruses that could be on your computer.  I would highly recommend scanning a drive before opening in on a computer to ensure there is no cross-contamination.

Can’t even wash the data out

The Pleomax USB Drives are extremely durable as well.  Ours were definitely put to the test over this school year – you should have seen the condition of some when they returned to me.  Mine even went through the wash once or twice.  Every time though, those flashes started right up with no signs of damage to the data.

Don’t lose that little stick

Although this Pleomax USB Drive isn’t the smallest available, it is actually a good size for our use.  Measuring about two inches, the drive is just about the right size to fit on a key ring and easily blend in with the keys.  I usually just place mine in my pocket and it’s a good size for that.  Speaking of key rings, there is a small ring included on the end of the drive.  I’m not too impressed with it though.  Through the year, numerous teachers had completely lost that ring making it easier to lose.  Although there was only one drive reported lost this year, the potential was high with this faulty ring.

My Viewpoint

Overall though, I am very impressed with the Pleomax USB drive.   It has a decent capacity and is durable to put up with what our staff dished out in an eight month period.  The faulty ring and a few not working properly were the only major concerns I had.  This is definitely a much more convenient form of data storage (though easily lost can make for some identity theft/confidentiality issues.)  The documents held on the drive are fully operational so all you have to do is plug it in an open them up.  One of our managers now wants to buy new ones engraved with our company information on it, but I’m more than satisfied with what we have.

I have two different 16 gig sticks and BOY can they hold a lot. I use one to transfer stuff from computer to computer and the other is a mini Back up for my important files. I love these little memory drives.
