Grand Theft Auto IV from Rockstar Games was just released for Playstation 3 and XBox 360.  I'm a huge fan of the GTA series, having previously played through the Vice City and San Andreas editions, and I knew I'd have to get this one as well.  The fact that I didn't own either console didn't deter me as I was sure it would be worth getting a new console for.  So I grabbed a PS3 and got started with a new life of crime in Liberty City.

Like all the GTA games, you start in single player mode as a fresh young hood in a big bad city.  The objective is to rise through the ranks of the criminal underworld by completing various missions including car jacking, drug dealing, extortion, street racing, assassinations, and the like.  Additionally, while the main story line is fairly linear, you have lots and lots of options for side activities and general undirected joy riding and raising mayhem on the streets of the fine city.

In Grand Theft Auto IV, you play a character named Niko who has recently arrived in Liberty City (modeled on New York City) from some vague Eastern European locale.  He meets up with his cousin, Roman, who runs a cab depot, but is heavily into debt due gambling.  Reluctantly, Niko is draw into the shady crime world while trying to help is cousin out.

Players familiar with the series will recognize the various aspects of game play, as not much has really changed.  The map is purely urban, unlike San Andreas (which had a lot of space between the three cities).  Here Liberty City's five boroughs make up the whole of the game area.  The graphics are stellar, especially in HD.  Even my wife commented on how good the game looked.

You will notice that Rockstar has trimmed some of the less engaging bits that San Andreas had, such as haircuts, tattoos, gym workouts, etc.  They also removed a few things that I miss (or maybe haven't unlocked yet?):  the tricking out of your car, the pneumatic car bouncing competitions, and the dance dance revolution like dancing missions with your girlfriends.

This new edition to the series is the first to offer online play against other people.  I haven't tried it out yet on the PS3, but on my firend's Xbox it offered various modes such as deathmatch, racing, car jacking, etc.  Also for the PS3 edition is the ability to control vehicles and such through the motion sensitive Sixaxis technology in the controller.

A word of caution:  this is not a game for your teenagers to be playing.  There is strong language, excessive violence, sexuality, misogyny, and bad morals.  Adults should be able to handle this, but if you are offended by any of the above, stay away.

In summary, I'm a huge fan of the Grand Theft Auto series and Grand Theft Auto IV delivers!  The graphics, audio, and most importantly, the gameplay all live up to the high standards of the series.  GTA IV is destined to become a classic, just like it's predecessors.

Age of Kings is a classic. Glad to hear you're still getting enjoyment out of it!

Yeah, I don't miss that customizing stuff from San Andreas too. Cool review!

I'd love to play this, too cheap to buy the system, though! Great review!

Yup. Totally agree. Keep the kids away.

My hubby loves this game, and I like to watch him play. It's a lot of fun! Too much bad language IMO, but, as long as there are no young children around, I see no harm.
