I'm of mixed opinion on DiRT, a rally racing game that I rented for my PS3 (also available for Xbox360 and PC).  I think it's me...I've become so used to open-ended, massive world, quest oriented games like GTA IV or WoW that a racer can't hold my attention.

DiRT does a lot of things very well.  From the amazing opening cinematic through to the game-play engine, the graphics are top notch.  The user interface for navigating the game is really well done and slick.  DiRT offers a wide variety of racing styles to try out and complete in, and lots of cars that you need to unlock or purchase (each with a handful of paint jobs that you can purchase).

From a game-play perspective, there are three modes.  Career mode lets you earn cash as you start out as a rookie on the circuit.  As you progress you unlock new events and vehicles.  The events are all over the place...timed solo rallies in German and other exotic locations, track events where you race on dual surfaces (pavement and dirt), crossover events, big rig hill climbs on Pike Peak, etc.  As you unlock these events and vehicles, you can then participate in the other two modes...one where you compete in full multi-stage rally races and the other that allows you to choose any combo of unlocked track, vehicle, conditions, etc (basically a practice mode).

The only major flaw that I saw with DiRT was the physics engine and how the cars interacted with the track.  For a game that is as visually impressive as DiRT is, I was disappointed every time the physics engine acted unnaturally.  Often the car would feel like a block of wood bouncing around the track in a very unrealistic way.  I realize this is a game though; if the physics where super real, I'd never get past the first lap, since I tend to crash into everything!  That said, I kept getting pulled out of the game play experience whenever my car "felt" wrong.

While there is a ton of variety between the racing event styles, tracks, and vehicles, ultimately I didn't find a lot of depth in DiRT.  It was enjoyable, it was challenging, but it didn't really captivate me.  I think I played about 10 hours and got about 25% through career mode before returning the game.  That said, if you like racing games and the play style they offer, I'd recommend you check out DiRT.

My kids are so used to massive games like you mentioned that I don't think they would give this one a chance. I'll have to see what Dan thinks. He's more of GTA (all of them) fan.
