There's no two ways about it: Discovery HD's broadcast of the BBC series "planet earth" is the best thing on TV. Its also probably the best HD footage I've ever seen.
The series is an 11 part series that took 5 years and more than 2,000 days of shooting to create. Using technology never used before in these settings (a 10,000 frame-per-second camera to capture a Great White breaching to catch a seal and an HD video camera with a lens to bring a wolf two-miles away into you living room crystal clear) the BBC has created a series that will give you a whole new appreciation for the the creatures...
read full review »My mom told me about this 11 part series back when it originally aired on HD TV. She has an HD TV so it must have looked fantastic. When I saw it was going to be on Discovery channel again throughout December, I knew I had to catch it. The only trouble is that this time it isn't broadcast on an HD channel but instead just the regular Discovery channel. It still looks really cool on my mom's TV, and still is worth watching on ANY TV you may have.
What is it?
Each of the 11 hour long episodes focus on one aspect of Planet Earth. Today I watched Fresh Water and Desserts. These will be replaying...
I absolutely loved this series and can't wait to see the movie they are making with it. I thought the scenes were amazing and the quality was very good. I can't believe it took them 5 years to make it. It was so worth it. I enjoyed the water episodes more than any of them. I am fascinated by those fish that live so far beneath the ocean. The best scene by far in the entire series was the shark eating the seal. When the shark jumps out of the water...WOW! That was awesome. Plent Earth was also very educational as well. Very well done.
As much as I hate to admit this, Planet Earth was a great documentary. I found it very informative and made me really appreciate life outside of the human race. What I was really impressed by was the fact that it took them 5 years to create it. Knowing that those people were so dedicated to to come up with such an exceptional piece is very inspiring. I did find that some scene were a little horrifying, like when the wolf was chasing the deer and caught it, they showed a bit too much of it eating that poor deer but the chase scene was very fun and entertaining until the end of course. Planet Earth...
read full review »I watched this series when it aired on TV, and couldn't wait for the next episode. The Planet Earth series showed our homeworld in all it beauty, diversity, grandure, and sometimes even in its ferocity. I'm usually very picky about how I spend my time in the evenings after work. Frequently, I don't even turn the TV on if the shows don't seem to offer anything worthwhile. This series, though, is definintely worthwhile.
The thing I remember most about it now was the incredible photography. Shooting the HD digital "video" using new techniques that had not successfully been tried before,...
read full review »I watched Planet Earth back when it first aired on Discovery Channel a couple years ago and I am still watching reruns whenever it comes back on Animal Planet. This is one of the great endeavours of nature filmmaking that will be a touchstone for things to come in the future. The footage is top notch and if you are lucky enough to view this masterpiece on a high definition television then you are in for a huge treat.
Not only is this series awe inspiring but it is thought inspiring. It makes you stop and realize how vast our natural world is from the great whales to the smallest and heartiest...
read full review »Planet earth on blu-ray is what blu-ray was made for. This series of dvd's has made my owning a plasma tv all worth it. I can watch this series over and over again. I love the narrotor for the english bbc version, but sigourney weavers narroation for the discovery channel version is not nearly as good. This is the best dvd you can ever buy. I have not seen such clarity outside of the real thing and the scenes that they show you is amazing. I love the look and feel of this series and it will keep the little ones enthralled as well. Do not hesitate at buying this set, and since it is coming down...
read full review »I could not believe my eyes when i first saw this show. It was so interesting and i thought it was going to be another boring earth show about saving out plaanet and boring stuff like that but it was so cool! There was animals on PLanet Earth that i had never seen before and it was amazing to know that there are so many things i dont know about. I watched it with my sister and she was even like " wow, thats so cool" and she was the one making fun of me in the first place when i went to go buy the dvds. It was so worth the money and for those who havent seen it, go watch it now! but after...
read full review »I would like to start off by saying that everyone I know has seen the Planet Earth series, and everyone is as amazed as I am! Planet Earth gives us a never-before-seen look at all aspects of our planet, and does so in a way that is truly captivating to all ages. I was not only amazed by the camera-angles and exclusive footage throughout the 11 hours of this series, but the fact that it was done in High Definition (HD) makes it even more special. Though planet earth is a year or so old by now, it is still probably the best HD programming I have ever seen. I can't imagine that any program...
read full review »The movie planet earth is a amazing narrative of our blue planet, we have one world to live in. It shows the world from outerspace to right in with the lions, bear, & tigers so to speak. Personally I'm alwasy skeptical about a documentry being a good movie, but this one ranks as excellent, it shows the constrast, the color, the depth of beauty that our planet holds. The movie gives you a interesting view on animals, instead of seeing them as some animal doing what their programed to do, you see how they have devloped their own unquie characteristics. If you wanted to know if I recommend it? I would...
