Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Review Summary

Set sail to see the first in the PIrates of the Caribbean series, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Despite some vague previews, Viewpoints reviewers found this film to be just as wonderful as the two PIrates movies that followed it, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Johnny Depp is always "at his best when he has a colorful character to play," and in The Curse of the Black Pearl, we're also treated to the characters played by Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush, and Keira Knightley, as they all played the same type of characters found in all Disney movies. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a family favorite of many Viewpoints moviegoers, being action-packed, as well as having humor and romance.

The Case

When Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl hit the theaters, I didn't have any expectations.  In fact, I wasn't even sure what the premise of the movie was thanks to the vague previews put out by Disney. ...

i must say, this movie was a horrible disappointment.  it was only made to draw people in theaters and get them to spend money on a mindless, meaningless, meandering letdown of a film.  what could have been great was instead another garbage movie i will never remember--or should i say, choose not to... read full review »

Minor Plot Details
At the start, a young Elizabeth Swann is sailing with her father and crew. She finds a young Will Turner floating in the water alone and they save his life. Behind him is a burned up ship that looks to have been hit by Pirates! Elizabeth takes a necklace off of Will that has a Pirates symbol attached. You see, Elizabeth has always been fascinated by Pirates.

Now, as an adult, she still has this necklace. Her father is hoping Elizabeth will marry his prized crew member, but being the rebel that she is this is not the type of man she wants to fall in love with. Elizabeth instead...

Wow what a performance by Depp. He is at his best when he has a colorful character to play.

I do like the mix of good and evil in all of the main Pirate characters.

Oddly enough the only thing I found disturbing with this  movie was that it had some of the same characters that are found in all Disney Movies, and I found that sad. It had the sweet but confused father, the absent mother, and 2 "criminals" one tall, lanky and dumb, with a partner who was stout, not that bright and slightly more evil.

Over all Depp's performance leads me to give it the full 5 stars. He is great fun to watch here....

Loved the movie. The characters were well designed and the actors chosen were well matched. The ability to create action, comedy, and romance all in one makes this movie great for a wide variety of movie goers. The wardrobe for the period was excellent. The sets used for the ship scenes were well designed to create authenticy and a sense of being there. The backdrops for the scenes all add to the sense of adventure.

The first Pirates movie...was Fantastic! I was super-glued  to the screen through the entire thing! It was colorful, thoughtful, bursting with energy and roaring with laughter. Boy was I surprised to find out there were 2 more! I fell in love with the characters, and the story was absolutely involving. The visual effects were stunning to say the least. I would recommend everyone watch this movie!Thank You Disney!

Of the Pirates series, the curse of the black pearl is my favorite.  The storyline was interesting, Jack Sparrow was fun to get to know and watch, and the special effects of the dead pirates in the moonlight was great.  I saw the other two Pirates movies and the first is my favorite.  And by the time the 3rd one came out, Jack wasn't as fun to watch.   Pick up this movie and get it a whirl!

i watched all of the pirates of the carribeans movies, and of all of them, this one was the hardest to understand. i had to watch it several times to understandthe meaning of some of the parts. it still had the overall effect that the producers tried to put out. i liked the movie once i knew whatws excatly going on. it wasnt as good as the first two, but it was still a great movie with plenty of laughs.

This movie is action packed with a lot of humor & romance as well.  I could, & have, watched this movie again & again.  The special effects are fantastic when the cursed pirates enter the moonlight. And I can't say enough about how gorgeous Johnny Depp is in this movie.  Even though he plays a dirty, effeminate pirate, he somehow comes off sexy & ALL man.

The most phenomanol Pirate movie I have ever seen!

The quick wittyness of the play writing, the makeup, the set, the actors--just marvelous!
The movie has enough story-line to keep you involved, but not enough to keep you intrigued with the next one!  Cannot wait until next one comes out!

Plus--who can resist Johnny Depp?
HM...SEXY!

I absolutely loved this movie. It was AMAZING!!! I was so sad when it was over and deffinitly couldnt wait for the next one. Love johnny depp and looove kira nightly. I love how Johnny Depps character is so confusing. I wish he played a bigger role and I also wish there were more scenes with animation and action. I love the suspence and almost all of the ship scenes!

Seriously.. Johnny Depp is one of the most AMAZING actors and he proves it in this movie. The did an outstanding job on the creation of this film from the storyline to scenes. I literalty felt like I was there as one of the pirates consumed in the plot. The realness is overwhelming and the cast did an outstanding job captivating the spirirt of their characters!

I really loved all of the Pirates of the Carribean movies. I hope they continue them some how or come up with something along the same lines. Truly awesome movie. Johnny Depp really did a fantastic job acting in these movies. They picked a perfect cast for all the characters which is really cool because it doesn't seem to happen very often.

This is the best of the three Pirates movies.  It had an original plot and great characters.  The trio of Depp, Bloom, and Knightley was great.  They all three held their own eventhough Depp did steal the show.  This is one of my favorite movies of all time.  I would encourage anyone to see this movie.
