Pioneer car stereo speakers are the best-kept secret in the industry. For some reason, other brands are more popular than Pioneer, despite the Pioneer's often costing 1/3 the price of more popular brands. I bought two pairs of Pioneer TS-G1641R speakers and installed them in my 2003 Subaru Legacy. I paid $39 per pair at Wal-Mart for these speakers.
What It Is
The Pioneer TS-G1641R is a 6.5-inch two-way speaker designed for automotive applications. The speaker has a 6.5-inch woofer and a small dome tweeter coaxially mounted with the woofer. The woofer cone is made from plastic that will not warp if exposed to moisture and a pair of speakers comes with grilles to make for a tidy installation.
The speaker chassis has holes around the perimeter that matched perfectly with the mounting points in my Subaru. The speakers also came with a couple hanks of cable, but I was able to use the connections that were already in the car.
The Pioneer TS-G1641R is rated to handle 160 Watts, but I'm feeding it with a 15-Watt per channel car stereo. It makes plenty of sound with this configuration, more than I can stand if I turn it up.
How Do They Sound?
Very good. I grew up with folk music and 1960s rock, and these Pioneer speakers do a terrific job of making this music sound rich and full. They have a surprising amount of bass, which sounds natural and tight with the music I enjoy. Just today, I listened to a CD by an acoustic pop group from the Washington, DC, area called "Eddie from Ohio" and its up-tempo acoustic music sounds delightful from the Pioneer TS-G1641R speakers. (Yes, Eddie from Ohio is actually from Washington, DC!) With the windows closed and the stereo turned up just a little too loud, I'm in my own world, and the TS-G1641R speakers are a big part of that.
Summary
The Pioneer TS-G1641R is an excellent car speaker for someone with traditional (let's say "Baby Boomer") musical taste. It's probably not the right choice for a serious hip-hop sound system but they are terrific for pop, light jazz and 1960-1980 rock. Installation was easy, too.
I recommend the Pioneer TS-G1641R car speaker.
