Old hands at travel to Santa Fe are well acquainted with the drive from Museum Hill to the Plaza. You come down Old Santa Fe Trail and pass the Pink Adobe, sitting behind the New Mexico State House.
The Pink Adobe is a “must do” for most visitors at least once during their visit to Santa Fe. There was only one problem for us.
We have become accustomed to eating supper at around 4:00 PM instead of a late dinner. We skip lunch. This gets us down to one substantial meal a day, post-breakfast. We eat it early enough so that we don't go to bed on a full stomach, which is especially important when we are travelling.
The Pink Adobe closes after lunch and doesn't open until 5:30 PM. But, good luck for us. There is an adjacent building called the Dragon Room. It serves a select menu, not as extensive as the main restaurant. The lovely courtyard that appears to account for much of the appeal of the Pink Adobe is not open to the Dragon Room diners.
But the Dragon Room itself is very inviting and pleasant.
So we decided to do the Dragon Room. We order two glasses of fine wine. $11 apiece but sizable glasses and good wine. We order the house burger. It was one of the best I have had.
As we sipped and waited for our burgers to be cooked, we read up on the history of the Dragon Room. It was a restaurant without a drink license that had customers bringing their own. It became enough of an irritant to the city that the owner applied for and received an alcoholic beverage license. After that it only grew in popularity.
