I've been playing golf for about 20 years. I started with an old set my dad had in his garage, Sears Stan Leonard Forged Blades with fiberglass shafts. For a long time I thought it was that I just couldn't play the game. Dad always said why don't you try some Ping Irons. So I finally bought a set of Ping ISI-K irons in 1999. Ping had just introduced their I3 irons and the ISI-K's were on sale. After playing with these clubs fro about a month, I found the ball flew farther, straighter and I began lowering my scores. Instead of never breaking 100, I began flirting with breaking into the 80's. Over the years, I've learned the feel of the clubs and now shoot a consistent 85 with an occasional 79. The secret to the club is the slight offset, the huge cavity back, perimeter weighting and the added toe weight. All of which helps the club face square at impact.
If you want to improve your golf game without breaking your bank account, try the Ping ISI-K Irons. Only problem is they are only available on the used market. Most every re-seller wil have them, however one of the best places is eBay. When buying used Pings a couple of things to know. First, each club have a serial number engraved in the hosel where the shaft attaches to the club head. Second Ping made the ISI version of the club in three different materials and in two size with a multitude of Lie Angles.
The ISI was first offered in Beryllium-Copper and Beryllium-Nickel. These were only offered in the standard size club head. The clubs can be identified by having ISI engraved in the cavitiy of the club. The BeCu are obviously easy to identify due to their color. The BeNi clubs are identified by having a smooth, nickel finish and the lettering and numbering in the club are filled with gold paint.
Later Ping introduced the ISI made of stainless steel and was offered in both the ISI standard size (Sometimes denoted ISI-S) and an oversized model denoted as ISI-K. The ISI-K was only offered in Stainless Steel and is the best choice for the beginner or higher handicap golfer. The Stainless Steel club are identified by having the lettering and numbering filled with white paint. The ISI-K is distinguished by having ISI-K engraved in the back of the club.
Next, Ping sold the clubs 3 iron through Pitching Wedge. To supplement the Iron Sets, they also produced 5 sand wedges to accompany the iron sets. The W2, S, S2, S3, L have lofts of 49.5, 52, 54.5. 57.5 and 60 degrees (incremented by 2.5 degree). Make sure you get a complete set, matching serial numbers.
Lastly, Lie angles. Ping offered a system of clubs where customization can be offered off-th-shelf. The standard lie angle was Black Dot, and is denoted by having a black paint applied to the dot in the center of the cavitiy back. Ping offered 4 degrees upright lie angles from standard in 1 degree increments. The colors are Blue, Green. White, Silver and Maroon. Going down or Flat in 1 degree increments are Red, Brown, Orange and Yellow. Most people fall into the Red, Black or Blue range. Go to pinggolf.com for more information.
