Piedmont Virginia Community College - Virginia  —

I live near Charlottesville, VA, and have been seeing my Mother through a series of health challenges. I've been impressed by the student nurses at the two local hospitals -- and at the Senior Living Center where she lives. They are getting a great education at Piedmont Community College -- which has a reciprocal relationship with nearby University of Virginia. At a fraction of the cost, a young person can get an RN degree at Piedmont in three years, get clinical experience at two quality local hospitals or a number of high-end geriatric centers, and then go on for a higher degree at a prestigious state university with full credit for classes taken at Piedmont. What a deal! I had the pleasure of talking to one of the student nurses, who is a bright high school graduate with the kind of grades that could get her into any 4-year college she wanted. But she chose this community college to get her basic degree at cost -- knowing that she would be accepted at the University of Virginia for a higher degree when she was ready -- and when her employer would help her with that cost. Smart young lady! In this age of astronomical college costs, using a community college as a first step makes good sense -- both educationally and financially.
