I bought a Phillips DVDR 3505 /37 because I needed one with a built in tuner and was assured by the salesperson that this was the best unit to buy both for features and ease of use. The fact is this is easy to use if you want to watch movies on dvd's. It is so easy to use. I'ts also easy if you want to use the one button record. There are simple instructions for that. The problem is using the timer to record - this requires previous experience as a rocket scientist to accomplish. To begin with there is one botton for on/off/standby and this button is crucial to operating this machine. To watch a movie you must press stand by or on - who knows. If you have a program set on the timer you may delete that program by using the on/off/standby button. You may turn the unit on and all of a sudden you're back at intitial set up and the unit presets the channels again. Mine does the intial set up 2-3 times a week and I have no idea why. My thinking is that I am turning the untit off instead of turning it on stand by, but there is no light or indicator saying which mode the unit is in and you must accomplish this from the remote which again has only one button for on/off/stand by. I'm sure this unit has super features and to tech-heads I'm sure these issues are self-explanatory, but to low-techies this machine is a nghtmare to understand and use. I would look at other options as the Phillips on-line tech service is poor.

My experience with Philips DVRs has been rather unrewarding. As with you I wanted something that was easy to use and would make good recordings … I’m still waiting … still waiting … Oh sorry is this 2008. My DVR died after only 6 months, I was not happy. It was not easy to use and the quality of the recordings was no better than VHS. Perhaps DVRs are better today, but I have found alternative methods to record my shows.
