Philips - Coaxial Wall Plate SWV2023W/17 —

Looking for a way to get reasonably priced Internet service at my house in the mountains, I found out that I could receive wireless service from Sprint... if I had an outdoor antenna. Sprint and Verizon have a wireless data services that are fairly fast but reception was awful inside my house.

I was able to solve that by installing an outdoor antenna on the chimney, then running a cable into the house. The cable temporarily ran under the door to get into the house but I knew that had to be fixed eventually. I fixed it by running the cable through the basement and into a wall on the main floor, where I installed this tidy-looking Philips wall plate. I paid $3 at a Home Depot for this Philips SWV2023W/17 coaxial wall plate.

What it is

This is a standard plastic wall plate, the same size as any standard electrical cover plate. It has two screws for attaching it to a standard electrical box and a single female "F" connector, the type used for cable TV connections.

Installing it

As I said, I ran the cable through the basement and up into a wall, where I made a hole in the sheetrock. I fished the standard RG6 cable through this hole and attached an "F" connector on the end of the cable. I then threaded the F-connector onto the back of the female connector on the Philips SWV2023W/17 coaxial wall plate. The only other thing to do was install a couple of plastic "molly" screw holders (which were not supplied by Philips) into the wall and screw the plate to the wall. I attached a short piece of RG6 coax cable on the front of the Philips wall plate and I was done. As you can see from the picture, it looks tidy when completed, although I should have gotten an ivory-colored connector plate to match the existing electrical outlet.

Summary

The Philips SWV2023W/17 coaxial wall plate is a cheap, simple and easy to install. It makes for a tidy installation when all is said and done, but I wish Philips had supplied a couple of plastic wall-mount screw holders to make the product more complete. No big problem though, as I have plenty of these plastic mollys in my shop.

I recommend the Philips SWV2023W/17 coaxial wall plate.

In response to Katrena's comment from Nov 22, 2008 at 2:56PM:

Thanks for stopping by! This is exactly what you need for a neat wall installation of a TV antenna cable. With a modest rooftop antenna, you can get free beautiful digital TV over the air. If you will be using your old analog TVs with the antenna, you will need to get a DTV converter box. The government is handing out $40 coupons for DTV converter boxes -- go to www.dtv2009.gov to get your coupons. Walmart sells the DTV converter boxes for $50, so it will be $10 after the coupon.

Let me know if you have any questions about this... it can get a little confusing.

Great review, as always. We may be dropping satellite TV and may install an antenna one of these days.
