I just love Philadelphia, and when I say that out loud people give me the strangest look. Even, or especially, when I say it in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is underrated, but that's all the better for those of us who know how cool it really is.
If you're a foodie, it's really a great town to visit. There are fab local markets, like the Italian Market in South Phillie or the centrally-located Reading Terminal Market. The fine dining here is creative and innovative, if you know where to look (ask a local foodie for a detailed and lengthy list). And the casual cuisine is fun for families. Everyone should have an authentic Philly Cheesesteak at some point, or an Italian Ice (a.k.a. "water ice").
This is also a great city to hit with kids, and I don't just mean little kids who are easily amused by a children's museum. Teens will totally dig the South Street area, filled with shops selling punk t-shirts, music stores, and funky items mostly of interest to teens and 20-somethings. Teens will also dig the Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia with a collection of anatomy specimens and 139 skulls.
For the little ones, some of the same places grown-ups enjoy are also fun. Go see the Liberty Bell because, well, you must. You are in Philly. They might get cranky in the long line, so be prepared to entertain them. The Reading Terminal Market is a busy place that is fun for kids (who can find candy galore) and adults (who can find gourmet food items and Amish handmade food goods galore).
If you love 80s movies, you will recognize a few spots in Philly. Rocky was shot here, and so was Trading Places.
The list of attractions for kids is probably too long to list here, but don't miss the Don't Touch Museum, Camden Children's Garden and Sesame Place. Nearby Manayunk is a great spot if you are looking for less of an urban feel. Right near Philly, this adorable town has great restaurants and boutique shops.
The only downside to Philly is that it can be tough to find needed baby gear and baby food in the center city. We asked our concierge at a hotel in the city about where to buy baby food, and we got a blank look and a recommendation to drive outside the city. I'm sure there are places in the city, but we mostly encountered upscale baby clothing and toy boutiques.
