What's Really in Pet Food

I always try to pass on the information I think would make a lot of pet owners more informed. Something I learned about a few years ago was the importance of ingredients in our pet food. My dog always licked her paws, seemed itchy, and I finally found out that it was most likely a food allergy.

We decided to see what else was out there and found out that CORN and by-products are common ingredients in commercial foods, and that includes Science Diet, Iams, Purina, grocery store brands...

I found an EXCELLENT source of information at http://www.bornfreeusa.org/facts.php?more=1&p=359

It's long, but extremely important and informative. You'd be disgusted with what goes in our beloved pets food.

I've gotten a few comments before that some people think it's some sort of PETA thing (no offense to them), but it is not. I hope people read and pass along the information. Do your own research online about the ingredients.

Another website that I've been passing along has not been loading, but I will check back later to see if it comes back, it is www.dogfoodanalysis.com which gives independent ratings of dog food based on it's ingredients.

Another good website forum is http://www.itchmoforums.com/ where you can keep up with the pet world. I've found a lot of useful information about food on here too, the members are VERY good people who constantly keep in contact with pet food companies to see if they are taking proper measures to keep our pet food safe. So many people were affected by those 2007 recalls and so many lost pets due to tainted and bad food.

Again, I just try to pass along what I feel is so VERY important for our pets. I sincerely hope that these sites can inform and help out any pet owners.

Rudi - we feed our boys raw food. We currently use Pawnaturaw they have a site of the same name and they also sell on Amazon.com we are happy with their product and our dogs are very healthy and happy. We try to stick with grain free (at least soy, corn and wheat free) products for treats as well. Our boys are bichons and they tend to be very allergic so instead of having to cure allergies we decided to go raw and grain free to prevent them. Its a little messy but our little boys are worth it to us (most of the time).

I feed my dog Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken Meal formula. It is grain-free, so my dog is doing wonderful on it.

Some grains arent bad, but you should stay away from corn, which is in most commercial dog foods.
