Hello, My long haired cat is shedding alot, and it's winter?  I read that is normal, but I am wondering if his diet is lacking?  Have any of you tried vitamins specifically for their coats and to ease shedding?  Found one that really works?  Thank you.

I have had cats my whole life.  Shedding is normal and you can especially notice that with long haired cats.  They tend to shed more in the summer than in the winter.  In the winter their coats become thicker to hold heat in their bodies, and then when they need to cool off they shed in the summer.

Is this the first time you have a cat as a pet?  You will find yourself doing a lot of vacuuming and will use a lot of roller type tape to remove cat hair from your clothes and furniture.  But, if you are a cat lover, then you know that the love they bring more than makes up for their shedding .

Our long hair sheds like crazy pretty much all year long.  It's pretty much a normal thing.  Sometimes their food can make a difference depending on what you are feeding.  Our preference has been the Nutro Brand as there are no fillers and it's a reasonable price.

There is no magic item for shedding, save for a good ol' hair brush. And this is a groomer's advice: Brush your cat -everyday- and you will see a big difference.  A good tool is the Furminator Shedless brush. It's costly but ever so worth it. If you can't afford the expense, most grooming salon offer the service for 10-15$ a session.

I agree about brushing your cat but I don't everyday.  I would brush your cat maybe once every week or two and you will notice a big difference.

What food are you feeding your cat? I generally advise people to avoid anything that can be bought at a grocery store or Target, WalMart, etc.  When I switched to a better-quality brand of food several years ago, I was amazed at how much better their coats were.  As a result, my cats tend to shed much less than they used to...

My longhaired girl also loves to be brushed.  She looks at it like a treat so it must feel good for her.  When it is shedding season (spring/summer), I make a point of brushing her every few days which of course helps with the mess.

Oddly enough, I was just shedding my cat this weekend.  It really helps!  I use a shedding blade, and just rub it all over him.  He loves it!  Then, I brush him.  And bathe him.  BIG DIFFERENCE!  I couldn't believe how much it helped w/ the shedding.

My Vivo cries out for the Furminator when she sees it.  Although priced on the high side, this device really captures the hair when your pet is "furminated regularly".  My longhaired dog Dolce's hair has literally filled shopping bags when I wait for a while in between "comb-outs".
