Senegals are great fun. They are known as the clowns of the parrot family; they love to do tricks, they love to learn, they love to please their owners. We laugh at our Senegal all the time - sometimes for the tricks we've taught her, often for just the natural personality that shines through.

Not known as the best talkers, they will learn to mimic in a squeaky voice. But there is such a desire to please that teaching them tricks is very easy. They love rewards of treats, but can be just as desiring of excited praise from their owner once they start to learn the trick.

We love everything about our Senegal except the screaming. Being a very social creature, she just has to be part of the commotion. If we have a loud conversation, if hand-washing dishes or clanking dishes together (such as emptying the dishwasher), or if putting away the groceries, she has to be a continual part of the noise. Their natural habits include calling to each other, so when we are not visible to her, she screams to locate us. We're used to it but our guests are not so appreciative!

Do always be alert when with a Senegal. They have extremely fast reflexes, and when spooked, will bite hard and fast. Also, if they are startled or scared, they will bite you to try to get you to fly away to safety. It's an odd way, but it's their way of protecting their mates.

Every bird does have its own personality. You may have a Senegal who is quiet and cuddly, but generally speaking they are active, energetic birds. I wouldn't think they'd be the best for homes with young children, but again, it depends on that particular bird.

We love our Senegal, and would certainly recommend that breed to those who wish to laugh often and be entertained by their pet.
