I have had several puppies, and the one thing I swear by is pee-pee pads! They attract dogs to the pad itself and keep them going on that designated space in no time flat. I am a big fan of treat- training so the attraction of peeing on the pad was double the benefit for them. I keep the pad by the door so that the idea of going to the door sinks in to them. after a while I remove the pad when I am home and pay attention to their behavior. If they go to the door, then they are looking for the pad and just let them out side. It removes a lot of potty training frustration for both you and the dog.
Also, for those long hours that your gone during the day (mostly pertaining to smaller breeds) it is a great alternative to coming home to a mess. The only frustration I experianced was with one of my dogs, whom was quite the mishievious little one, the mess I can home to some times would be pee-pee pad guts trailing down the hall way!
Above all other training methods though, this is the highest recommended by me, and the most conveniant for your house, you and your dog.
