My brother-in-law gave us a young parakeet and a cage last year. He raises parakeets and cocktiels, but he doesn't train them. We had parakeets when growing up, so I knew a little about them. But I've learned a lot since then, and would recommend parakeets as pets. However, I would recommend reading about them first so that you can care for them properly.
Our little "Peeper" is quite a songster, although he doesn't talk. He does respond to us when we whistle, though. He always climbs on our hands and likes to nibble on my hair. He can do some amazing acrobatics and is very entertaining. My granddaughters enjoy him, too, even though he does bite, though not hard. And my husband, who's not a pet lover, enjoys him as well.
A few months ago, my brother-in-law gave us a female also. She's much more timid and quiet, but she's adjusting. I read that parakeets need companionship and mate for life, so that's another thing I would recommend to anyone considering getting one. Get two, especially if the house is empty most of the day. They really need companionship.
They do make a mess with seeds and feathers going everywhere. And they can make quite a racket at times. So you have to be sure you can deal with that. But if you want a little less quiet and more fun, get parakeets.
