Wow! What can I say about budgies? They are definitely a marvelous and fascinating pet. I have 2 budgies now (my other 3 have passed away from old age ailments in the past 4 years). These guys may be little in size, but they are big in spirit. Budgies make great bird companions as they are naturally curious/friendly. But don't let them fool you! Those little beaks can still deliver quite the whallop! Budgies can pick up language quickly and can have a very large vocabulary. My Boyd knew all the other birds by name and when he visited with them would call them by name and add "birdie" to it. He loved his Girlie Birdie, and his Kiwi Birdie very much.
Budgies are very energetic and absolutely love to play. Provide them with a roomy cage (I like to use one that is 18X18X22 or bigger. They also enjoy millet spray like it is a gourmet item. Try to get them on a pelleted diet. But since these little fellows are seed/grain eaters in the wild, I recommend a 50/50 diet of pellets and seed. Remember, you can just put pellets in their cage and expect them to eat it. There is a conversion period that requires tons of patience, but it will pay off in the end. They also enjoy some fresh fruits and veggies along with an occassional SALT-FREE cracker. Salt is toxic to our little friends when ingested in large amounts. And these little guys don't need much for it to be a large amount.
If you are considering a budgie for a pet, I suggest that when you go to pick out your new friend, that you stand back and observe them. Look for one that is naturally curious. All of my friends have "picked" me. As I was watching them, I notice that they were intently watching me...lol So that is the one that came home with me. There are many other things that you MUST consider before purchasing a budgie. I suggest reading up on these little feathered bundles of joy. Bird Talk Magazine is a good place to start. Just do your homework first and you won't go wrong. Best wishes and loads of love is what I wish for you and your feathered friend.
