Great Danes are a fantastic choice, as far as dogs go. They're known as the Apollo of dogs and as a Gentle Giant. As an owner of three, I can say that I have quite a bit of firsthand experience.
They may be absolutely gigantic, but they're actually great for small houses and even apartments. Most have a very low activity level and are content with making your couch their own and napping throughout the day. A great guard dog, but gentle with the children. We are the parents of an amazing Great Dane. This breed is the best and most regal. He far exceeds our expectations of what a loyal and loving dog should be. With his silly antics and deep emotions, he has made our days happier and more fun than we could ever imagine. My partner has a unique connection with our Great Dane. They actually talk to one another and seem to be more like best frineds. Great danes are lap dogs trapped inside a VERY large body. One of my best friends has always keep Great Danes and Chiuahuas. They make great companions to each other, the Chiuahua seems to think it is a Great Dane and vice versa.
