Pros

Multicolored blooms, Low growing, Hardy and low maintenance, Colorful plant for a shady area

I had the best of intentions when I bought these flowers from an online garden site.  My thinking was that the multi-colored variety of low growing plants would work as a colorful border on either side of my walkway.  I thought it would be so cheerful to be escorted up the back path by the sight of Mixed Hardy Primrose.

I bought 9 of the plants for a little less than $25 and waited for them to arrive.  I had pictures in my mind of the mounds of purple, pink, yellow, and white flowers sitting atop dark green foliage.  At least, that's what the picture in the catalog looked like.

The plants were smaller than I had anticipated, but I planted them and hoped for the best.  Sure enough, they grew quite nicely and I even got some flowers the first year even though I wasn't expecting any until the following spring.  My problem occurred the following spring when the primrose seemed to have lost their energy.  I checked the notes that I kept and I figured out what the problem was.  The primrose was supposed to be planted in shade/partial shade, and I had made the novice error of planting them in full sun.  Yikes.  I probably gave the poor things a sunstroke.

At any rate, I still think these are cheerful flowers and if I can find a better site for them, I would definitely try them again.  They are suitable for zones 3 to 8, grow to a height and spread of 6 - 12 inches and flower from early spring through early summer.

Mixed Hardy Primrose perennial flowers can provide a lively burst of color in a shady garden spot.

Yes, I just have to figure out where to transplant them. Decisions, decisions. :)

I love the blast of colors these give. You should be able to transplant them still and they will be ok.

I love primroses. Can you try transplanting them to another location? Good review.
