To my astonishment, those sorry little plants turned out to be the best groundcover I've ever planted. In the early spring, the garden is carpeted with glossy evergreen leaves that grow quickly, but not invasively. By early May the vinca begins to bloom with a carpet of violet-blue flowers. It's particularly nice to look out onto the back yard and be greeted with a bed of blue flowers under the budding shrubs. Before my cat passed away, she loved rolling around in the ivy and her frolicking never seemed to damage the plants.
Evergreen Vinca is suitable for zones 2 to 9 and can handle shade and sun. In the areas where the plant is in full sun, the colors do tend to wash out a little, but nothing serious. The only maintenance I do is clip them back a bit in the spring and in the fall. The clipping helps to encourage new growth and it also keeps the leaves from winding its way up into the shrubs. I do water it during dry spells, but I mostly just leave it alone and I haven't had any problems with it. The vinca acts as mulch around my shrubs and I've cut down considerably on weeding and watering chores.
If you are looking for a groundcover for rocky areas, slopes, and other uneven areas, I highly recommend that you consider adding Evergreen Vinca to your landscape. In the spring and fall you get violet blooms, and during the bare winter months the evergreen leaves remain for year round interest.
