My teachers have always had them sitting on the window ledge of our school rooms and my Mom has had these planted around our house since I can remember.  You ask her what she would like for Mother's day and it will be Red geraniums.

Geraniums are easy to grow and you will have all season color from spring to fall. You will find many buds on one stem and when they all open you will have one large beautiful flower. They come in Reds, Salmon, White and Pinks. You can also find them in an Ivy plant that works great in hanging planters. The regular geraniums grow well in the ground or planters.

This is a plant that loves the full sun or partial shade.  Last year we planted Mom's geraniums in an old, black metal fire pit that well, was no longer in fire use, but it was still pretty.  Mom wanted her flowers in there.  It didn't have drainage in the bottom so I took some small logs and some rocks so we wouldn't get any rotting of the plant roots on the bottom.  We used Miracle Gro moisture control potting soil so they wouldn't need to be watered as much.  They like moisture, just don't over water...If the leaves start turning yellow you have an over watering problem.  Just pinch those leaves off and it will help the root system.

Tip: Slugs like geraniums too and if you plant your plants in the ground and find you have slugs...share your beer.  Take a cover to a spaghetti jar and push it into the ground so it is flush with the ground and pour in a little beer, up to the rim.  Slugs will for sure come and join you for a drink.  This also works in veggie gardens.  I had a neighbor that would do this.  I would hear him say..."A little for you and a little for me" when he was in his garden. I had to ask so he showed me this little trick.  I tried it in mine and it really works.  The slugs don't make it back so to speak.

When a bud is done blooming snip it off with scissors or a pruner so it will feed the roots for a stronger root system.

Happy gardening!

between you and me I love Pansies and they are in my garden every year for my Grandpa. My Mom loves them so it's all for her and they love her back they way they grow for her. I got my "Nana's" "donkey tail" plant that was over 50 years old and the darn thing died on me...I was crushed and my boyfriend now hubby asked me about it and I made him toss it away for me and save the planter. I feel your pain on plants not growing for you! :)

My husband used to help grow these in a professional greenhouse. He will talk geraniums forever, and used to buy them for me every year. Guess what? I have never been able to get them to live longer than the life of the flowers they came with. I don't know what it is about me. Give me anything in the mint or pansy families, and I have a garden. I lived in Spain for several years. They would put geraniums in a pot and hang them on the white-washed walls in the severe summer sun and drought. My first memory of Spanish towns is always the geraniums and canaries. They are so pretty. I just can't grow 'em.

My mother used to ask the neighbor, who smoked, for a cigarette. Bugs love beer but hate tobacco.
