Pearl Jam - Ten —

Pearl Jam's Ten was likely the most important album for me in high school. Each song is poignant and well done, and the interplay between the musicians is incredible. There is a great balance of song types, and Eddie Vedder's vocals are consistently compelling.

The album opens with "Once," an up-tempo song that is part of what has come to be known as the "Gossman trilogy" (along with "Footsteps" and "Alive"). Then comes "Evenflow" (Perhaps as famous for Adam Sandler's parody as 'Operaman' as for the original), which moves along at a brisk tempo. Despite the parody, I think Vedder's vocals on this one are completely appropriate, as close to 'in the headspace' of a homeless man as I can imagine, and the lyrical imagery is beautiful ("lays his head on a pillow made of concrete," "thoughts arrive like butterflies").  Also, it contains my favorite guitar riff on the album. Then comes "Alive," another song in the Gossman trilogy. The song describes a mother's obsession with her son as a kind of 'incarnate' of her late husband, and includes the best 'sing-along' chorus on the album with the incessant, tormented refrain of "I am alive." "Why Go" is one of the oft-overlooked tracks on the album. It describes a girl whose family has given up on her and institutionalized her.

Other highlights include "Black," a tortured song about the end of a relationship, and "Release," a cry to fathers everywhere to let their children live their lives as they see fit.
