Pearl Harbor  —

My father joined the service on December 8, 1941, he wanted to join the Navy but was color blind, so he joined the Air Force instead. The Horrific attack on Pearl Harbor happend almost 66 years ago. His one regret was he never got to visit the U.S.S. Arizona and pay his respects to those that gave their life so we could be Free! My father passed away in Jan of 2005 and I vowed to visit the Memorial and pay my respects one day.

I got married in June of 2005 and made up my mind that this would not only be the happiest day of my life, but I would Honor that vow to visit Pearl Harbor. When my father passed away I placed a Gold Fish hook on his lapel, I also got a matching one that I wear on my hat(more on that in a bit)

The ride on the boat out to the Memorial was awe inspiring, to see the Arizona at its final resting place was one thing. To see all the empty Bright White moorings where our Fleet was on that faithful day added to the somber mood. As I stepped off the boat onto the Memorial I felt chills run up my spine, but I also felt so proud to be in the presence of the Spirits of the Sailors that lost their lives that day.

As I gazed over the railing I noticed the oil breaking the surface of the water and spreading their little rainbows in the water. Beside me to my right was my wife and to my left a Chief Petty Officer. I made a remark of how beautiful it was and then he spoke to me and my wife. He said those were the Tears of the Arizona, that she was crying for her crew. He said that once all the Sailors assigned to the U.S.S. Arizona were reunited again that the tears would stop.

I at that point had a few tears of my own and a feeling of calm came over me. You see after he said that I removed my hat and held onto the matching Gold fish hook. I told my wife that Dad was there with me and he finally got to pay his respects as he always wanted to. After a few minutes we went to the wall that holds all the names of those lost that day and again I felt very somber.

Although it represents a very sad time in our history, I am glad I was privileged enough to be in the very place that so many Brave Souls fought for our Freedom. The U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is a must see to anyone that visits Hawaii. We owe that to those that Lost their lives for us, we owe it to ourselves.
