Ok, let me start by saying that GlaxoSmithKline is in a whirlwind of class action lawsuits all stemming from paxil users. The company is being accused of knowingly misleading the public about dangerous side effects and withdrawal symptoms as well as the effects on an unborn fetus. (Paxil is a huge money maker for them)
My sister remarried two years ago and started a new life with her new husband and his 2 young children. With her having 2 children of her own 4 children all similar in age was a challenge. Although she is very strong willed she told me that she was thinking about talking to her doctor about trying a medication for the mild anxiety she had developed with the new demands on her life. I encouraged her at the time there did not seem to be any harm.
Two weeks later she saw her doctor and was prescribed Paxil. She called me to tell me and my reaction was positive I mean everyones heard of Paxil. It just seemed like a reputable name.
After 3 months of 20mg she decided that it was not for her. Not only had her sex life become non existent but emotionally she wasn't feeling much of a change.
She contacted her doctor and he advised her to begin breaking them in half and taking 10mg for a week then 5mg the next week.
About 3 days into her 5mg week she became very ill Vomiting, Extreme dizziness, Extreme headache and fatigue. It was Fall so we all assumed she had come down with the flu.
After 1 whole week her existing symptoms did not subside, and she also began feeling "shocks" in her head.
Her husband called in the middle of the night and told me he was bringing the children over so he could take my sister to the ER.
That night was agonizing but her husband finally called and said she had been admitted for Paroxetine (Paxil) withdrawal.
My sister was able to come home the next evening but she was still very ill. Her headaches had become so unbearable that they had actually given her Morphine in the hospital.
This was a very scary time for both our families within about 10 days most of the symptoms began to subside, but the dizziness plagued her for over a month.
I was very upset and immediately began to do research on Paxil. My findings were unheard of. Here is just one of the thousands of sites that talk about this.
quitpaxil.info (click on symptoms)
or just do a search on Paxil withdrawal. You will not believe what comes up. Believe it or not her case of withdrawal was rather benign compared to some of the more severe cases.
