I don't worry about what I'm going to do with my kids when we go to Monterrey because I KNOW they're gonna love Parque Plaza Sesamo. Little guys love seeing all their favorite Sesame Street characters, from Bert & Ernie to Big Bird, but despite the apparent toddler focus, it's actually a park that's appealing to older kids as well, and teens especially love the big water slides.

Parque Plaza Sesamo has a few shows, eateries, and smaller theme park rides, but it's really more of a water park than it is pure theme park.

Elementary age kids do like the rides though. Especially the Expreso Minero --- a smaller roller coaster that's made to look like a mining train. Despite its diminutive size though, it packs a couple wicked corners to it and is actually a bit scarier than I'd expected. Expreso Minero is probably too intense for a 5-year old, but the 10-year olds love it. The littlest guys might want to check out an even smaller steel roller coaster, called CatariƱos. It's smaller, gentler, and great for instilling confidence in bold 6 year olds. The only other ride that younger teens would like is the huge twisty bus thing that's up at the top of the castle.

The waterpark has a big area that's good for toddlers. There's a large shallow wading area there and lots of things to climb on and under while gentle showers cascade down. They've got a neat little river tube ride, called Rio Feliz, and it's gentle enough to bring the whole family along for a little float. They've got at least 8 big tube chutes that twist around like spaghetti, eventually dumping out in a big tide pool about 4 flights of stairs lower than the rest of the park. Lots of fun (except for the stair climbing part, but hey, no such thing as a free lunch, right?)

They have a couple shows here, but they're small and noticeably low budget. Little kids still get a kick out of them, but the 8-year olds roll their eyes and ask if they can go do some more tube chutes.

Parque Plaza Sesamo is a good, smaller scale theme park. They're heavy on the waterpark attractions, but given that Monterrey is often blistering hot, that's more of a "pro" than a "con". I like its convenient, central location, right on the edge of Parque Fundidora, and I especially LOVE its very affordable prices. Regular admission is just 159 pesos (about US$15) and an annual pass is available for double that, so of course, we just go that route. Mrkstvns sez....RECOMMENDED FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY (EVEN THOSE JADED TEENS).

In response to GeorgeChabot's comment from Apr 11, 2008 at 4:16PM:

Nope, different television franchise. Come to think of it though, I recall a Barney show someplace I've been recently...think it must have been Universal Studios Orlando. You might want to beware of dorky purple dinosaurs if you find yourself headed that way...

As long as they don't have Barney, I'm OK with that. ;>
