When I had one child I always just carried them around. Then I had another child close in age and couldn't hold one child's hand and carry the other. Use a stroller, you say? Yes, I could do that but I prefer to keep my baby close by me. My babies always escape from buggies or cry mercilessly. They are happier in my arms where they belong.

My girlfriend purchased one of these baby wrap carriers for me as a gift. I thought she was krazy for buying me what seemed to be a big long piece of fabric and spending $50 on it.  Then she showed me 'the light'. Using this giant piece of cotton fabric (with lycra blend for stretch) you can wrap your baby and "tie them on" in just about any position imaginable.  Side, Front, Hip, Back, Facing in or out and even breast-feed. The only thing difficult about this is that there is a learning curve involved with figuring out how to do the wraps for each of the different holds. There are a lot of websites that show step by step and it comes with instructions. It is almost better if you know someone who has one to show you first-hand as some of them are a little bit tricky.

I like that my baby is close by me as if I am "wearing them" like a piece of clothing. There are no bulky straps, padding or frames and it is one size fits most. Men could wear this too (well, mine is a feminine color they may not be willing to).  The cotton is breathable and easy to wash. Small enough to toss in a diaper bag or purse too (all folded up). I have used mine with an infant and also have carried toddlers with it (weight limit is 40 pounds) and my back doesn't ache.

If you are handy you could probably make something very similar but I'd rather just go spend the $50!
