We have used both similac advance and Parent's Choice with Iron (Gentle).  With our 1st two it was Similac and Isomil.  Finally, it occured to us that it was a waste of money to shell out 8-10 bucks a container more for a brand name.  Our 3rd and 5th children became constipated quickly and never did get over it, they needed additional water or Karo syrup to keep things "flowing".  Our 4th child has no issue switching formula's.

I was pretty excited about the savings since the quality seemed to be the same.  Once I put the labels side by side, I realized that corn syrup solids (sugar) is the 1st ingredient in the Parent's Choice while Similac's is nonfat milk.  To be fair, lactose (the 2nd ingredient in Similar) is simply milk sugar and I have no idea how much of each are in there.

A quick internet search leads me to believe that corn syrup solids are processed with some pretty harsh chemicals and contain an acceptable, by gov't standards, level of sulfur after processing.  Lactose is the part of milk that is left behind along with whey after milk is processed to cheese.  It's basically natural carbs.

Long story short, now I'm back on the fence.  Is it or isn't it a good deal and good quality?

Why would anyone put any sort of chemical in their child is beyond me. I have stuck with Similac. The other thing to remember is that soybean oil is a chemical too and found in many things such as formula that is store brand. It may be cheaper to by store brand, but what are you really putting in your child's system? I've done the research and I'd much rather spend the extra money now and not later in dentist and doctor bills. Oh, sugar like corn syrup solids just adds decay to your childs teeth. Like Aspartame, Nutra Sweet, Splenda, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and soybean oil which are all chemicals that are put into products that are sometimes labeled "energy" or "sugar free" are known to cause cancer and headaches. Cancer?! That's enough for me to stop consuming it and stop giving it to my children who are still growing and so on. Anyway, if it ain't broke don't fix it, but if it is potentially harmful to you or your child I would suggest find another solution. Not that the harmful is immediate, but over time in one's life.

In response to bmom's comment from Jul 8, 2008 at 9:11AM:

For crying out loud, I am sure every mother knows the benefits of breastmilk, unforunately not every mother can breastfeed. Iam tired of people shoving it down our throats. If "breastmilk is free" (duh), then why are you even on a formula review site. Just go breastfeed something...

Great information for those who choose to formula feed. Some may only look at the nutitional information and not the ingredients to see what is really in the formula. Welcome to VP and I'm sur you have plenty to say about baby products with so many babies! I look forward to reading more from you.
