Okay, as you may already know if you have read my other travel reviews.... I am a huge Antoni Gaudi fan. His works are just incredibly brilliant, flamboyant and exciting. He certainly did not let me down with his spectacular Parc Guell located in the Gracia area of Barcelona, Spain.
Parc Guell sits on top of a once barren and boring mountain overlooking the city. Gaudi replaced the dead, rocky terrain with flare, fun and adventure by creating the park back in 1914. As usual, he used earthy, organic materials to create interesting pathways and gardens. The infamous dragon, made of bright mosaics, creeps down the entrance fountain. Two fabulous gate houses welcome visitors at the entrance as well. Honestly, when I walked through the gates I felt like I had just fallen in a Dr. Suess book. The textures and serpentine-like curves that Gaudi uses in his structures are so artistically formed. The mosaics are ultra bright and colorful. The entire park just has this awesome energy that leaves you feeling like a little kid again.
From the main terrace on top of the hill, you can see all of Barcelona. The city scape sparkles almost as much as the Mediterranean Sea that hugs the coast line! Great photo-ops all around. Watch out for the annoying tourist-types that have mega scope cameras aiming all over the place. They get so into the photo and forget there are people around.
You can visit the park for free! All the more motivation to make the climb up to see it! If you do not enjoy walking then I would suggest grabbing a taxi because it is quite a steep journey uphill.
I visited on a Friday around lunch time, thinking it would not be very crowded but I was wrong. My only complaint was too many people.... it got a little annoying to constantly dodge fellow tourists. But, how can I blame them? They were there for the views just like I was! I will definently go back again. It is not the type of place that you think, "Well, I have seen it once and that is all there is to see." I want to see it at night and during all the different seasons too!
