Parakeets —

I own about 26 parakeets (they keep having babies). I have owned parakeets for 24 years. They are beautiful and have different songs for their different moods. My children love them (even the ones that bite :)

It takes time and patience to tame a parakeet and it is much easier to do the less you have. However, I find that even with the amount I have it just depends on their individual personalities. Their experience with people also plays a big role.
For example, my cousin adopted a parakeet from an elementary school. Due to the children constantly poking at it through the cage with pencils, the bird became the worst behaved bird I have ever encountered! In order to feed her, we had to wear a leather glove because she would attack without hesitation.
Many people believe that having only one would make training it easier, which in some ways is true. The problem with that is they are forcing the bird to become their friend by subjecting it to a period of great loneliness. Parakeets NEED to have at least more then one companion. They are flock oriented birds with a strong instinct to bond. Mirrors help very little as the mirror cannot travel with it throughout the cage. Which brings me to leaving them caged up is not healthy.
Parakeets need exercise! After all, they are designed for flight!
Once their needs and emotional well beings are taken care of, they have the possibility of becoming your best friend!
My "alpha male" often flies in the living room to sit and sing to me! He is extremely tame and that was with no help from me. He chose it to be that way and that means all the more to me.
They are easy to care for. You keep their seed dish full at all times. Which, depending on the amount of birds and the size of the food dish could be once or twice a day. Keep their empty seed shells off of the top so they can find the new ones. Changing their newspaper (if thats the cage liner of your choice) as needed and keep their water fresh and clean! It doesn't take long before the task is routine and completely worth the companionship and pleasant atmosphere they provide! I can't picture ever living without parakeets again and the amount I have has earned me the loving name, "The Bird Lady"!

In response to crusader52's comment from Jun 9, 2009 at 7:47AM:

I wanted to get back to you right away as I feel deeply for your loss.
I am not an expert my any means but have been thoroughly self
taught since I was 8 and got my first parakeet which I am up to about
25. Through all my years i have experienced some similar situations. One was
that the other bird became agressive and rendered my bird unable to move on
his own. I had to get the poor thing put to sleep.
The other one I had I was deeply attached to and cried for days, even periodically
through the weeks following when I had to put him to sleep. He had an unknown
issue that caused him to eat constantly (I don't think he was digesting it correctly)
and then his eye started bulging out bigger and bigger every day tll I couldn't stand
to see him suffer any more. It was so sad, It was one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life.
The point of that sad story was I think he had a tumor developing in his brain
which was pushing his eye out. I get sick to my stomach when I think about how
painful that was for him.
Another time there was a strange death that occured a few years back. I had
a parakeet who was the "alpha male" so all the birds worshiped him (so no
fighting was involved). I woke one morning to find him dead at the bottom of the cage (no warning)
and his foot at been severly discolored and extremely crippled. That was the only sign I had as to
what MAY have happened. A disease perhaps? He was a dear friend of mine as well. I miss him
greatly.
Well, the point to my morbid stories is that parakeets are prone to have diseases at times due to genetics.
My current alpha male, Snowy, is mostly white and I have had him healthy for about 8 years.
Please don't be afraid of getting another bird. The bird you have left now knows what it is like to have a companion and
can become very depressed over the loss.
Well, I hoped I helped you in any way possible. I love birds so much, They are the only things that can bring a smile to my face.

I also have 2 parakeets. I bought one first and he wouldn't train no matter how hard I tried, then I bought a second and put them together. They got along really well. I must agree they are messy, seed everywhere and feathers when the seasons change. Earlier this year when I uncovered the cage I noticed Doc's leg was hanging. I took him to the vet and he told me he had a tumor and his leg was paralized which he lost. Then the last couple of days I noticed him laying on the bottom of the cage in the morning and yesterday I saw his other leg was paralized. In a matter of a few hours he died. I was told by my vet that parakeets get tumors which is something I never knew. Doc was my good boy and Washee is my messy boy. I did have to seperate them after Doc lost his leg because Washee was mean to him. He wouldn't let him eat or drink blocking both dishes anytime Doc would come down to eat. Since you own so many parakeets have you ever had a problem like this with any of them? We buried Doc yesterday in our yard. Heartbroken of the loss. Would like to get another but afraid to because of what the vet said. If you know anything about this your feedback would be appreciated.
