I am on the Internet a good portion of the day everyday. Whether I am writing a review as I am doing now or just surfing around, I love to have music in the background. I used to play CD's but I get bored listening to an entire CD from one artist. One day while I was surfing the net, I stumbled upon Pandora Radio. I couldn't believe that I could customize radio stations and listen to them free!

About Pandora and How It Works

Musicians and music-lovers founded Pandora in the year 2000. The basic premise of the site is that the user can create his or her own radio "stations" by inputting the name of an artist or song. Based on the user's choices, Pandora very accurately suggests other similar bands for your enjoyment. It is surprisingly accurate and I have already found a few new bands that I now listen to and enjoy because of the site. You can share your playlists with friends and bookmark favorite bands or new bands you like for future listening. If you don't want to enter a band or song, you can also listen to premade stations based on categories and sub categories. Other features of the site include track listing and discography of the bands. Clicking the songs on the albums from the artists will take you to their dedicated webpage that will also display lyrics. There is a small play button next to the songs so you can listen to a short sample of the songs. If you like the song/album, there are links on the left of the page to purchase the song/artist from Amazon or Itunes.

A Few Flaws

I love this site but like any other, there are a few flaws. While at first it seems intuitive, a number of useful features are not in easily accessible parts of the site. In addition, the user cannot listen to specific songs from an artist because Pandora randomly picks songs from them for you.

My Final Viewpoint

Although Pandora is still in the process of expanding and is definitely a work in progress, they have already accomplished a great feat. This site is great for anyone who likes to listen to music while they work or just want to explore new bands. I recommend this site and I am giving it a 4 star rating.

I used to listen to this all of the time. I don't know why I stopped. It's an awesome site! You get to hear new music that you may have never found.

One of Bryan's favorite sites, it has introduced us to all kinds of new music and groups based on what we play there.

It really is pretty awesome. No commercials, no talking ... hmm, I should have said that in my review. Doh. lol

The site explains the name like this: About Our Name

The name Pandora means "all gifted" in Greek. In ancient Greek mythology, Pandora received many gifts from the Gods, including the gift of music, from Apollo. She was also, as we all know, very curious. Unlike those Gods of old, however, we celebrate that virtue and have made it our mission to reward the musically curious among us with a never-ending experience of music discovery.

This sounds neat! I'll have to check it out. I usually listen to Radio Margaritaville while reviewing... or cleaning... or cooking... or pretty much anything else. =)

Hm. I wonder why they picked Pandora for a name. I always see that poor mythological woman unleashing all the evils known in the world from her wooden box and barely keeping Hope inside at the last minute....

Great review, Laurie!
