Unless you arrive fairly early on a Saturday morning, you'll probably have to wait in a short line at this popular restaurant. We always plan to get there by 9 am, and haven't had to wait terribly long for a table.
At the door, you'll be greeted by the always-courteous staff, and a blackboard with the day's specials. I admit that I always check out the specials but never order them. I have two things on my mind--the heavenly Dutch Baby and a side of the heartiest, smokiest thick bacon on the planet. One time I did break my habit and ordered Swedish pancakes (also yummy), but I seldom experiment. My husband loves the omelets and Belgian waffles, and of course, the bacon.
The Dutch Baby is a smaller version of a German pancake. It's baked and fluffy, with just the right touch of crispy edges. The Dutch Baby is generously sprinkled with powdered sugar, and when you squeeze fresh lemon over the sugar the resulting glaze is perfection. The sweet/tart combination keeps the pancake from being too sweet, and I don't even need syrup. I think that's the main reason I enjoy this dish even though I don't care for regular pancakes and syrup.
The atmosphere at the Pancake Café is warm, comfortable, laid-back and friendly. It's a good way to start any Saturday before you run your errands. If you're in the neighborhood, this is a nice place for a tasty and affordable breakfast.
