I have owned this pizza cutter for seven years, and it looks sparkling brand new despite being used almost weekly. The current pizza cutter that is being sold by Pampered Chef boasts a four-inch stainless steel wheel and the black handle features a smooth, round grip made of a plastic that feels solid. Compared to my pizza cutter, the newer product is angled for an easier grip. In front of the round blade is a stainless steel finger guard that protrudes from either side of the handle.
At the current price of $9.75, this is a durable product that performs rather well. I say "rather well," because there is a trick to getting it to slice through pizza, especially deep dish. You will need to have a running start before it hits the item to be sliced. This means that you'll have to start about an inch away from the pizza and run the blade over the pizza to get the best cutting action. Using this little trick, I am able to get the cutter to slide through deep dish pizza with relative ease. I have used it to cut brownies, apple bars, and lemon bars but since the wheel is so big, it does not get to the end of the pan. This works best on desserts out of the pan, but you can simply take a knife and finish off the cutting if you use it with a pan.
This blade is sharp, so you'll have to handle it with care. A protective plastic casing is included and this is a great feature when storing the blade in a drawer. The protective cover saves wear and tear on the blade and keeps your fingers safe if you have to play "hunt the utensil" every time you open up a kitchen drawer.
The blade goes right into the dishwasher and the stainless steel means that there is no rusting. After seven years of tossing this in the dishwasher, it has held up as if it is new.
One thing--- the straight handle is hard on the wrist if you have several pizzas to cut through. The new product with the angled cutter solves this issue.
One of the best things we use this for is with homemade quesadillas:
Take a flour tortilla and place it in a dry pan.
Add your favorite shredded cheese, cooked chicken and grilled onions
Top with a tortilla and cover with a lid.
In a minute, flip it over and grill the other side.
Slice with the pizza cutter and serve with a side of sour cream and guacamole.
Yum!
