Palacio de Bellas Artes —

Mexico City is a smorgasbord of options for the arts lover, and high on the "ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE" list is the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Though it's sometimes referred to as Mexico City's opera house, that's really just the tip of the iceberg.

Yes, it is an opera house, and performing arts are front and center stage at the Palacio de Bellas Artes --- especially the renowned Ballet Folklorico, in which regional and historical dances reflecting all the cultural influences of Mexico come together in one explosively colorful performance. (Performances are generally Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings).

The place is also a museum and its a showcase for some of Mexico's grandest murals, including some of the most outstanding works by Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and others.  Off the grand main hall are a number of galleries where you'll find some of Mexico's most valuable paintings and sculptures. Most of Mexico's top artistic minds have their works showcased in one or the other of these galleries and you can get an excellent taste of top quality works just by strolling through this one venue.

It's an easy place to visit, next to the Alameda Park, and within easy walking distance of many of Mexico City's most popular downtown attractions. You don't want to miss it!
